Hi, agan, Nina,

I post this under your request for Obits - "A" / Ashley, but though it should be placed here also since the original posting for obituaries was over a year old. Thought maybe this would be better placed here.

All for now, VirJean

My information on Ashley Hill Cemetery is that it is located high on a ridge near Shrewsberry, Kentucky with at least a dozen unmarked stones and only three stones with dates for Kever Ashley (21 Mar 1896 - 24 Apr 1896 - Infant of Soloman C. & Mary Tom Sapp Ashley); Bash B. Ashley (24 Dec 1887 - 19 Jun 1911 - d/o Solomon C. and Mary Tom Sapp Ashley); and Seba Blanton ( 1 Nov 1868 - 4 May 1900 - w/o Leander Blanton and d/o William I. Ashley and Mary Jane Raymer).

In 1980 the instructions to find Ashley Hill Cemetery were given as follows:Take U.S. Highway 62 west from Leitchfield. Turn right on Caney Road, follow for about 1.5 miles and turn left on the M. Z. Layman Road - follow this gravel road along the ridge on your left for approximately 1.8 miles to a fork in the road - after climbimg the ridge, walk to your left along the top bearing Northeast for about 1/4 mile. The cemetery area is first noticed by a widespread gtowth of creeping vine ground cover. The area is badly overgrown with brambles, vines and trees.

The cemetery was copied 8 Oct 1980 by: Patricia Ashley Wieger, 2314 Pikes Peak Blvd, Louisville, KY; Freela C. Webster, Box 442, Monroeville, IN; Betty McQuillen, Rt. 2, Box 356, Bransenburg, KY; Linda Oliver, Valley Station, KY; Martha Lentz, Louisville, KY and Tim Farris, Rt. 2, Caneyville, KY.

Note: Although most of the headstones are unmarked, the following persons made verbal accounts that Welcome M. Ashley, Basheba Ashley, William Ingland Ashley (We can assume that Mary Jane Raymer Ashley is buried with her busband William.) , George Frederick "Fed" Nelson and Martha Jane Ashley Nelson are buried in this cemetery.-- Mamie Ashley Clements, Leitchfield, KY; Mary Magaline Nelson Staples, Grayson Co, KY; Wilma Nelson, Stevensport, KY, Frank Ashley and Bob Nelson.

Now, as to how accurate the instructions of how to get to Ashley Hill Cemetery would be in 2004 is up for grabs. At this point it may so overgrown you won't be able to locate it. You might have better luck in the fall after the ground cover dies back. However, there is also a possibility that some descendants have reclaimed it. One can always hope ---

Hope your parade went well,
