Please contact me about the USS Tackle. My father was on the ship, James Donald Crenshaw and I know of another man who lives in Florida who was a diver on the ship.

JIm,
I have a feeling most if not all of the men who were on the Tackle may have passed by now. I found a man through an article online. He was a Navy diver and I found a great article online that he wrote about being on the Tackle and I think another ship. I called him and talked to his wife. She told me that he could no longer remember anything and was suffering from Alzheimer's.
Do you know what type of injury your uncle had and when it happened or how it happened? My dad was also injured on the ship. My dad suffered a severe concussion when a bomb blew up near the ship. I have his records and have the exact date.He later died from his injuries but the Navy claims his injuries didn't cause his death.

Goodmorning Donna,Great to hear from you.My uncle passed in 1979.I know he did alot of diving after the service so i assume he did during the war.I was going through pictures with my aunt yesterday and her oldest son dives. She said he was awarded a purple heart and just learned this recently. She said he never spoke of the war but did to his sons.I will try to get you in contact with him (Paul Carroll,i have to check last name spelling)my uncle was my grandmothers brother.Paul his son lives in georgia brett lives in pa and gary lives in ohio and i know they would know alot.As a kid my grandmother would talk of his friend that was killed and would think it was from the mine that went off. Thanks,Jim

Jim,
Awhile back I sent for and received all of my dad's Navy records. I believe that h should have received a Purple Heart also. I wonder if it was the same mine that caused both of their injuries? The other diver I told you about also talked about a mine exploding near the ship. It happened in March..I don't remember the year. I can't remember where I found the article online but I'll look for it. My dad wasn't a diver but the storekeeper. Can you give me your email address so we can "talk" off of the board?
Thank you,
Donna

I have recently learned that my father served on the USS Tackle. His name was Charles Carroll. I do not know what his rank was but, do know he was not an officer. Maybe someone (if they are still alive) might have some informtion or photos. I do have a photo of him on the ship.

I found a ship roster on Ancestry for the USS Tackle for April 1944. My dad was on it but Paul Carroll wasn't on it at that time. Are there any other people in the photo?

I'm sorry I meant Charles Carroll...but there are more USS Tackle lists. It looks like men were onand off the ship at different ports.
