I believe that I have established a link to the ancestors of James Bliss to Northamptonshire, England. James Bliss, b. 1790. His father was William Bliss, b. 1760, m. Sarah Harriotts in 1779. His father was Thomas Bliss, b. 1736, m.Ann Insall in 1758, and his father was Edward Bliss, b. 1671, m. Mary Smart in Avening, Gloucester, England in 1726. I would be interested in corresponding with anyone who has more information on this family.

Lyman A. Bliss

Dear Barbara -

This is a long shot, but... since you included NY in the title of your email, I thought perhaps my maternal Grandfather; Lyman A. Bliss of Long Island, NY (also New York, NY and Buffalo), may just be someone you're looking for.

If this sounds likely, please don't hesitate to contact me.

What I know about Thomas Bliss is that he was the founder of Bliss Tweed Mills in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire and that he married Ann Insall. Her parents were Thomas Insall and Dorothy Shortland. Thomas Bliss' parents may have been Edward Bliss and Mary Smart, married 1726 in Avening, Gloucester, England. Thomas Bliss had a son John who was born about 1760 in Chipping Norton. One of my Insall cousins visited Chipping Norton last Christmas and came up with the info.

By the way, in the 1851 England census images, there is William Bliss of Chipping Norton who is a woolen mill owner. This would probably be Thomas and Ann Insall's grandson or great grandson.

hello Mary Beth

Guess there isnt a connection ...my Thomas Bliss was born c1788 in Stroud , Gloucestershire and stayed there all his life . Two of his sons went to the London area (Thomas and Charles) . Charles' son Charles later emigrated to the Usa with his family . My line was through another son of Thomas (1788).

Regards
Carol

FYI The Bliss family of Gloucester purchased a home called the Hatton House pre 1600s. Apparently they lived in Gloucester area for quite some time. I'm descended from Thomas Bliss who arrived very early 1600s in New England through my mother. I don't have the information at hand but will post it at a later date. My Hattons are also from Gloucester and Hereford.

Do you have access to the England Census images. You Thomas Bliss was still living in 1861-73 years old.
