The Martin Shaffer you describe must be the same Shaffer who is the great-great-grandfather of my husband Clifford G. Shaffer. Martin Shaffer was born in Lancaster County, PA, in 1853 to Lewis Shaffer and Elizabeth Luttman. Lewis is the son of George Shaffer and Mary McCracken.

Is this Martin Shaffer by chance the same Martin Shaffer whom lived in Ohio. My great grandfather was Martin Shaffer. His son Albert Joseph Shaffer did move to South Bend Indiana, then to Niles Michigan. This Martin Shaffer married Rosa Moll in 1885

I believe we are talking about two different Martin Shaffers. Our Martin lived in Dekalb County, Indiana, married Rachel Lehner, and did not have a son by the name of Albert Joseph. He was born in 1853 and died in 1928.

I'd like to know more about your Martin Shaffer, grandson of George Shaffer. You also mention the name Luttman in your post. My George W. Shaffer was born about 1803 in Pennsylvania, lived in North Mulberry Ward during 1850 Census, was a shoemaker, had a wife, Catherine. By old Philadelphia city directories George W. Shaffer was first found at Lilly Lane also called Lilly Alley in some directories. That Lilly Alley became Struthers Street in a later renaming of Philadelphia Streets. A new found obituary for the George W. Shaffer I seek from the Philadelphia Inquirer Newspaper dated Feb 25, 1867:

SHAFFER - On the 22nd inst. Mr. GEORGE W. SHAFFER, in the 64th year of his age. Followed by a poem, then - The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from his late residence No. 1241 Struthers Street, this afternoon, at 1 o'clock. To proceed to Mount Moriah Cemetery.

Children of the George W. SHAFFER in the above obituary were:Sarah, Elizabeth, Henry, George, Susanna (married Charles Tees / Teas / Teese Phila 1858, Amanda (married Edward M. Potts Phila 1859 - he died Andersonville Prison during the Civil War Aug 28, 1864), living with family was a Thomas McDonald in 1850 age 5, child shown as Thomas Shaffer (spelled Schaffer in 1860 census). George W. Shaffer's (1803-1867) wife was Catherine. She lived with two of her daughters, also widowed by 1870 - Amanda C. Potts, and Susann Tees at 922 Rementer Street, Philadelphia, PA. Amanda C Shaffer Potts died in 1905 and is buried in the Dunmore Cemetery adjacent to Scranton, Lackawanna Co, PA.

Is there anyone familiar with any members of this family who lived at least half a century in Philadelphia?
