my fathers name was Robert juan Illig. He was born May 07.1924. He died July 18.1994. His parents came to the United States from Germany around the 1800's. Their names were Edward Illig Sr. and Ophelia Koehler Illig. If you are needing any information on this blood line I would be glad to ask the older relatives on my dads side that are still living.

I am descended from Hans Rudolph Illig, b. 7/28/1700 and d. bef. 1741, and Maria Magdalena ??. Any information on them or their forebears would be helpful.

I have no idea of the derivation of the name Illig. As for pronunciation, it would (as was common in German) probably have been pronounced with a "soft G"...sounding like "Illik". Hence the probable interchangeability (in American English) with "Illick".

In my (genealogical) experience, a number of American immigrant names got "transliterated" phonetically, either by the owners, or by county clerk-types trying to communicate with a new resident speaking limited English. In my own family line, for example, the Feit family has variously showed up on records as Feit, Veit, Fite, Vite and Vide...
