Dankerts from NYC

My roots are all from the NYC area. I know that my gggrandfather--Johann Dankert--came to NYC in 1868 with his wife Sophie. They had three children: Charles, Josephine, and Frederick (the latter was my ggrandfather). I haven't yet determined where in Germany they were from, though I've narrowed it down to Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The only thing we have from Johann (John, as he was always known to us) is a letter from his brother Christian in Germany (Dabel), written in 1883.

This sums up all I know. If anyone can come up with any connection, please let me know.

Frederick Dankert who is my great great grandfather came to America about 1870. He lived in Indiana. His mother's name was Sophie as was his wife. He also had brothers named Charles and John. He had a sister named Freidreka. I am wondering if he could be the same as your Frederick.

I don't think that our Fredericks can be the same, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some connection. I have Frederick's birth certificate--he was born on July 25, 1873 in NYC. He was my father's grandfather and my father knew him all his life. He never moved from the NYC area.

I know from this birth certificate that his parents' names were Johann and Sophie Dankert. Sophie's maiden name was Kretzmer.

I do have a letter from Johann's brother in Germany and there is reference to a Carl (which would be Charles here) who moved to Chicago. He was a carpenter. My gggrandfather Johann was also a carpenter.
The letter also mentions a Marie Dankert who lives in Chicago (apparently not married to the Carl). She was a dressmaker. These are the only midwest connections that I know of.

I wouldn't be surprised if my John and your Frederick were brothers, or some relation. From the letter I have, it sounds to me like the family tried to keep in touch, despite the long distances.

Your right my Frederick is not the same as yours. My Frederick was born abt 1837 in Mecklenberg, Germany. He came to the States abt 1870 with his wife Sophie and ended up in Indiana where he lived all his life. I guess we will have to keep searching.

I know of this Charles Dankert who married Anne Lauer. I have info from a Family Tree Maker CD that the marriage took place in 1890 in Manhattan. (But I don't know if the date is rounded to the nearest decade.) I have been wondering if this Charles is the brother of my ggrandfather, Frederick. The date is about right--the Charles in my family would have been 26 in 1890. I have been meaning to get a copy of the marriage certificate, to see the names of Charles' parents but haven't done so yet.

My father well remembers his grandfather and tells me that as he was growing up, there were times they referred to "the Brooklyn Dankerts" and he always assumed that they came from his grandfather's brother.

The other sibling of Charles and Frederick would have been their sister, Josephine. Since your Charles had a daughter by this name, this makes me think all the more that there is a connection. Do you know what Charles did for a living?

I couldn't find your email address to reply to you directly. Mine is, if you wish to send me mail directly yourself.

It has been awhile since we talked last. I now live in Phoenix, AZ. Any new info on Dankerts? Have you gone any further back from Johann?
