Dear Terrie, My grandfather was Leonard Elray
Cheek, also known as boss. I'm starting a search of my geneology and came across your name. Johnny Tucker Cheek was my great grandfather. I can only go back to William Draton Cheek, who was Johnny Tucker Cheek's father. I would appreciate any other information you could give. Thanks, Linda Cheek

I don't have much. My husband's grandfather was Perry Frank Woodard bd: 9-22-1885 and dod: 12-15-1959. His brother was Jack Christopher Woodard bd: 1-18-1883. Their mother's name was Georgia and married a second to a Mr. Porterfield and had a daughter by him named Iva Pearl bd: 7-6-1890. I haven't found Perry Jack's father name yet. Mrs. Georgia Porterfield's obituary says she came from Arkansas around 1919. Good hunting!

I just received and have been reviewing a box
of genealogy information that my Grandmother,
Eliza Pruitt Cheek gave my brother. From this
information I have the following: Johnny Tucker
Cheek's father was William Cheek (some controversy
as to the middle name. I have found nothing in
my research to show that William Draton Cheek
fought in the Civil War or was killed in the
battle of Manassas. Johnny Tucker Cheek's mother
was Sarah Ann Stone. William and Sarah married in 1854
and had four children - Johnny Tucker, Samuel J.,
Sarah and Jim.

William's father was Willis Draton Cheek and his
mother was Priscilla Simms (?). They had 8 children
William, Barney Tucker, James M. , John P., Mary, E.V,
L.C, and Thomas. Willis's father was William Cheek and his
mother was Mary Polly Vines. William's father was James Cheek
and his mother was Elizabeth Smith., James's father was Richard
Cheek and his mother was Jane Randolph (?).

I live in Virginia and will be going to the National Archives
as well as visiting some sites in North Carolina and South Carolina
to verify the above. Until I do, I just look on this
information as leads. I'm rather new at this and am anxious
to confirm the lineage.

Your information in very interesting. I look forward to what you find. I'm planning to visit my husband's aunt to see if she has any other information. Also, I'm searching cemetary records here in North Texas. I did find two Cheeks (while searching another family name) that are buried in a "lost" cemetary in Bedford, TX. They are Newton H Cheek died 3-24-1876 and Maudie M Cheek died 7-31-1886. The search for ancestors is fun and can be exciting. I recently found a whole branch of my father's family (Tarwater) that have been living in the same area as me and I didn't know it. We plan to meet soon a swap family info. Good hunting!

To Jan McFarland and Terri Woodard
My great-grandfather was Samuel J. Cheek brother of Johnnie Tucker Cheek. From family stories: Samuel and Johnnie walked to Texas as young boys when their mother remarried after the Civil War. William Draton Cheek was a soldier during the Civil War and died of a disease but I don't know what disease. The name William Draton has been carried down two more generations. Samuel J. Cheek had a son named William Draton who is buried at the George's Creek Cemetery, TX. Samuel J. Cheek's daughter Cordie married Tell Armstrong and named her youngest son William Draton. I would like to hear from both of you. Please send e-mail to
