Hi Gene.....Norma Jean (May) Huss is the lady you are inquiring about, but she passed away. Her book THE MAY FAMILY TREE is available at the library in Mt Vernon. I think my dad talked to a 'distant' relative the last time he was there. If you call him he may have the information you seek. From everything I can find, there is no solid paper trail that he was Cherokee, everything is word of mouth and has come down through the family. And yes, my email has changed !

I believe that the story, as told to me by Larry May, goes like this. The family that adopted Holden woke one morning to go outside to find this young Indian boy holding onto the post of a gate. He had spent the night holding himself off the ground to protect himself from something or someone that was chasing him. The family had compassion on him, taking him, in as their own son, naming him Holden Gate May. Holden Gate for him “holding on to the gate” all night.

I too am descended of HGM. I recently posted a picture on ancestry of Solomon Terrill May from 1927 that has notes about HGM non-churchyard burial near Metropolis, Ill. I have been doing heavy research into the possibility he is a Choctaw with parentage coming through Henry Co., Tenn from Mississippi Choctaw Nation per Treaty of Dancing Creek 1830ish. Me- with a variable suffix like - tubbe can be source of shortened May for Americanization. My Murrie and Ridge lines also appear tied to Cherokee Trail of Tears passing through Tennessee at same time.

Norma Jean Huss wrote the book. She was my best friend but she died several years ago.
I have one of the books. I'll probably never use it so I'd sell it if anyone is interested.

Hi! I am the neice of Gene Snyder who started this thread. He passed away recently, but I took over his research many years ago and he never told me about this book! Do you know if I can find this for sale online or anywhere and what the price of it would be? Thanks! Jami Snyder - Van Amburgh jamivanam@gmail.com

Surnames: MAY, CULBERTSON, PALMER
I too am a descendant of Holden G. May and Jane Palmer through their dau. Susannah who married James Culbertson. Holden would have been my 3rd great grandfather. I too have heard that a story about some kind of storm or natural disaster (tornado) that came through the area and the next morning there he was found holding onto a gate and then the family took him on to raise.
I have heard this happened in the month of May so therefore his name was given as Holden Gate May. So who raised him? This is considered to be the beginning of the May line from which we descend but who exactly raised him? I too have this book so maybe I need to get it out and look it over and re familiarize myself with it.
