Searching for my great-great-grandparents WILLIAM GORDON and his wife ISABELLA INNES GORDON. The LDS has them marrying in the Parish Church in Speymouth on 14 Dec 1839. Their daughter ISABELLA GORDON, born 18 Mar 1845 (or 1847) married WILLIAM CAMPBELL on 23 Sep 1881 and emigrated to Boston in 1887.

I am intriqued by your query. My great great grandfather, John Alexander Urquart Gordon Mackenzie joined the civil war on the Union side in Washington, D.C. and later NY under the name of John Innes (an alias). He said that his mother's name was Gordon. Fly. History related that he was from the Inverness area (I believe around Invergordon). I have a list of his brothers and sisters (one of the sisters was named Isabella). His brother fought for the south in the civil war.

I strongly suspect that my gggrandmother, Margaret Gordon who married Alexander Proctor of Speymouth, was the child of Robert Gordon and Margaret Innes and christened in Boharm Parish 21 Feb 1791. Could there be a connection between your Gordon-Innes' and mine? - something that might verify my ancestry?

To Gordon Bassett. It appears we may have a match with Robert Gordon and Margaret Innes. The LDS has record of them having five children:
Isabel chr. 6 May 1775
Ann chr. 20 Jan 1780
Alexander chr. 22 Jan 1782
Robert chr. 13 Mar 1785
Margaret chr. 21 Feb 1791
Robert was my ggg-grandfather, and a researcher has advised me that his baptism is recorded in the Boharm O.P.R. on 13 March 1785 as: "Robert, Lawful son to Robert Gordon and Margaret Innes was baptised." I have since been able to trace his marriage to Jane Simpson in 1807, and to their son, William Gordon, who married Isabella Innes in 1839.
Unfortunately, as yet I have no further information on his sister, Margaret, or on their parents, Robert Gordon and Margaret Innes. That will have to wait until I visit there this summer.

Could you be so kind as to tell me how you have substantiated that Elizabeth had a brother Peter ? I have a
family bible belonging to Peter Gordon who married my great,
great great grandmother, Mary Drillio from that union a daughter, Sarah was born. Sarah Jean Gordon married John
Cruickshank, son of James Merklin Cruickshank.
Any further info you may have on Peter, would be much appreciated. I have documented Peter Gordon, widower, farmer in Musquodoboit, applied for marriage bond to Mary
Drillio 26th of June 1824 in Halifax, N.S. Your discovery would imply John Cruickshank married his cousin, ( this is
not totally uncommon for that time ).

I do not know how/why Isabella Proctor arrived in Kelso Borders where she married George Lockie in 1853 - in 1851 census she was working as a servant at Goschen Bank Kelso. Her grandaughter married my husband's grandfather in 1914

To Heather Hunter - Many thanks for your response to my Gordon/Innes note on the Ancestry Board. I am a descendant of Robert Gordon and Margaret Innes (they were my 4th great grandparents), through their son Robert and wife, Jane Simpson, their son William and wife, Isabella Innes, and their daughter Isabella Gordon who married William Campbell (my great grandparents). After arriving in the US, William and Isabella moved first to Sangerville, Maine and then to Dexter, Maine where William worked in the woolen mills there. Before emigrating William had worked in the woolen mill in Innerleithen and then in Elgin. Isabella was four years older than William; she died in 1909 and he in 1930. They are buried in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Dexter.

I have been to Elgin twice in my researching but have not been able to find anything further on Robert Gordon and Margaret Innes. It is a shame about the fire at Grant Lodge. Should you have any information on Robert and Margaret, I would be most appreciative if you have a chance to send it.

Many thanks,

Gordon Campbell Lawrence

Thanks for your reply - I have no more information. Interesting the move from Innerleithen to Elgin because of the occupation in the woollen mill. I now have a reason why people moved between these 2 areas at that time - even though many would not have travelled far - could never understand why my Isabella Proctor ended up as a servant in Kelso from Banff

Thanks for your reply - I do not have any more on Gordon. Maybe another visit to GRO Edinburgh would be positive - I live just outside Edinburgh
