The system of civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in England and Wales on 1 July 1837 (a couple of decades later in Scotland and Ireland).

Prior to that, you will need to search parish registers for records of baptisms, marriages and burials. These do not, in the vast majority of cases, provide anything like the same amount of personal detail as civil registration certificates so, unless you are dealing with extremely uncommon names, ensuring the accuracy of your research will depend on using other sources to corroborate your conclusions.

Hope this helps

Make sure you buy your certificates direct from the GRO (www.gro.gov.uk) where they will cost £9.25 including worldwide postage. Many organisations will attempt to charge you a lot more for a poorer service.
