Surnames: Prendergast, Hennessey
Hello all,
I'm stuck at a dead end, and am reaching out for help.
My ancestors James Prendergast & Nora Hennessey (Hennessy?) immigrated from Ireland between 1847 & 1850 with their young son, Edward. Nora died very young, so I can't find any record of her, or of their lives in Ireland. I believe they came from County Mayo.
Has anyone stumbled across any information?

There's marriage on 1845 Co. Cork for a James Penderghast to a Honora Henessey

There's also a baptism for a Edmond Prendergest 1847 Cork, father James mother surname Henessey

Hello Melissa,

Information uncovered at the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) for County Cork (North & East) shows that James Prendergast and Honora Hennessey were married in the Youghal, Catholic Church in 1846.

The IFHF homepage can be found at:

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the marriage index for James and Honora that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain a transcription of the marriage record from the IFHF. You’ll have to purchase credits with a credit card to obtain the transcription. The IFHF website has more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions at:

The marriage index follows:

1 match for the search criteria: Prendergast (plus variants) James 1846 Parish: YOUGHAL (RC)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Cork (North & East)
Surname: Prendergast
First Name: James
Spouse's Surname: Hennessey
Spouse's First Name: Honora
Father's Surname:
Father's First Name:
Mother's Surname:
Mother's First Name:

Parish/District: Parish: YOUGHAL (RC)

I also found the baptism index for an “Edmond” Prendergast who was baptized in the Youghal Catholic Church in 1847, which was one of the worst years of the Great Irish Famine. But, in this index the IFHF search engine only accepted Mary Hennessey as Edmond’s mother, not Honora, and so I can’t say conclusively that this index refers to your Edward. The mother’s full name could have been Honora Mary or Mary Honora, but this is only a guess.

The baptism index for Edmond Prendergast is below:

1 match for the search criteria: Prendergast (plus variants) Edmond 1847 Parish: YOUGHAL (RC)

Record Type: Baptism/Birth Records for Co. Cork (North & East)
Surname: Prendergast
First Name: Edmond
Father's Surname: Prendergast

Youghal is pronounced “Yawl,” and is a seaside town located in the eastern portion of County Cork, on the border with County Waterford. The two counties are separated by the River Blackwater estuary, which empties into the Celtic Sea.

There are three Catholic Churches in Youghal, the oldest of which is St. Mary’s, built in 1796. This is the parish church and the one that James Prendergast and Honora Hennessey were likely married in, and where their son Edward/Edmond was probabaly baptized. St. Mary’s Catholic Church is located on Ashe Street in Youghal, and should not be confused with St. Mary’s Collegiate Church, which is a Church of Ireland parish located on Emmet Place in Youghal.

Go to the following link to read more information about the Catholic Parish of Youghal:

Youghal has a very rich history and was once the home of Sir Walter Raleigh, who lived at Myrtle Grove. Walter Raleigh was also the mayor of Youghal in the late 1500s. For more information about Youghal, go to the Wikipedia article at:

To view a Goolge Map of Youghal, go to the following link:

Once at the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to Youghal. Go to the Zoom-in/Zoom-out gage at the upper left corner of the map. Zoom in toward the top of the gage so that the streets and landmarks of Yougal are more clearly delineated. On the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to Dolphin’s Square/Market Square. To the left of Dolphin’s Square you’ll see North Main Street and South Main Street. To the left of North and South Main Street you’ll see Ashe Place, where St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church is located.

Next, left-click on the letter A to generate a “Street-view” thumbnail photo of the town. Click on the photo to enlarge it, and you’ll be able to navigate to Ashe Street from Dolphin’s Square to see where St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church is situated. You’ll also be able to navigate to other areas of Youghal.

I hope that you can travel to Youghal someday, as it really is a nice little town in East Cork.

Best Wishes,
