Wm. WELKER - Anna RADLE marriage info WANTED!

Dear Family Researchers:

I just received a copy of "A Comprehensive History of the Town of Gratz Pennsylvania", which was done by the Gratz Historical Society back in 1997. This seems to be a wonderful reference volume and I'm sure I'll learn a lot about the family and the surroundings from the book.

One troubling item (I hate this!) ... I was checking on William Welker and Anna Radle and I found the following: "William may have m Anna Radle ... a dau of Michael and Anna Margaretha (Wirth) Radel ...". (p. 452)

"May have married " ... like in "Maybe Not"?

Does anyone have any documented proof of this marriage? If not, then I have to find some ... somewhere ...

I can trace back to Anna Radle ... but my Welker connection is, according to this book, in doubt, and, therefore, my connection to the Wirth line ... and, perhaps, so is yours!

A Wirth line expert (and he is!) tells me he doesn't have a marriage date, preacher, etc., for William Welker and Anna Radel Welker. He suspects that they were married at St. John's Lutheran Church, Berrysburg, PA, and states the Historical Society had no means or documentation at the time to prove or verify the connection, e.g. preacher or church record... that's why they said "may have married".

I hope someone can point the way. Does anyone know if the Berrysburg Church is in existence or, if not, where records might be kept?

This hobby is becoming a disease!

Thanking you in advance ...

If you forward your e-mail address-I'll send a map of Berrysburg, Pa. around 1900--there were several churches, a store, a hotel, pottery and cabinet makers shops. They catered to the miners who worked on Short Mountain.
Summit Branch Mining was the operation name, but was probably part of Hanna's operation out of Ohio.

Hi Sally,

I appreciate your message reply and the information.

I have found that St. John's in Berrysburg is very much alive ... the info I wanted regarding the marriage of Wm. Welker and Anna Radel has been secured. I also journeyed to the Church and adjoining cemetery this past summer and found the headstone for Anna ... it states she is the daughter of Michael Radel!

Looking forward to the map and info. Is there anything I might send in return?

Could you send me the information you received about this marriage? I'm researching "Welke" and "Radle" among others. Thank you.

Hi Joyce,

St. John's, Berrysburg, PA:

Cemetery Records show: Welker, Anna Readel, wife of William, daughter of Michael Readel, born July 1, 1802, died July 23, 1852 at 50 years 23 days. (This appears to be the "paper proof" of the marriage of William Welker and Anna Radel.)

A visit to the Berrysburg Cemetery (St. John's Evangelical Lutheran) turned up Anna 's gravestone: Ann - daughter of Michael Readel, wife of William Welker, was born July the 1st 1802 and died July the 23rd 1852 - age 50 years and 23 d's.

A copy of the gravestone is attached.

I would appreciate sharing notes with you. Please contact me directly:
