Does anyone know if patient records still exist and where they might be stored? Looking specifically for pre-1950 records.
In addition, were any photographs taken of the institute during that period?

Thanks

Hi, Contact the Hospital - they will know where the records are: May have been sent to the Provincial Archive in Edmonton. [or perhaps destroyed]

Do an online Google search - for the following - they should be able to assist.

I was told about 8 years ago that all records were destroyed. Of course I was looking for 1920. I found it most helpful to contact the funeral home.Hope you find something ......Elemeer

I was at this hospital on August 2010 and inquired about the records pre-1950. I was told that in 1974, all records were destroyed. Presently, only records for the past 10 years are kept.

I have had the opportunity to look at some of the Ponoka records at the Provincial Archives of Alberta.

There are some records with patients names on them, but apparently the patients files are not available.
The database online is not complete....there are millions of records at the Archives that haven't been input into the system yet.

Hi, Ancestry.ca has released & transcribed the 1921 Canada Census & I just found the census pages for "Conoka" Mental Hospital, Strathcona, Alberta. You may find the names of staff & patients, which may be of interest to you.

Hi, I saw your message about patient records for the Ponoka Mental hospital. I had a great uncle who I believe died in the home.He wasborn in about 1867 in Ireland and was a pioneer in Alberta. He died in 1958. I would be interested to find any good websites which you have found useful. I live in England , so it's not easy to 'pop' over to Canada to find the information!

Kind regards,

Margaret
