Sophia Gault m. to David Irvine

I am a descendant of Sophia Gault (b1650) who married David Irvine. I have extensive info on the two in many books and all say that Sophia was "descended from nobility of Scotland and the Shaws who built Ballygally castle in 1625". It does not elaborate on her parents names or which Shaws. Ballygally Castle was built by James and Isobel Shaw in 1625 and if she is a relative of theirs it shouldnt be too far off considering they all lived in somewhat the same time period. I cannot figure out the connection. If she is a direct descendant of James Shaw who built Ballygally he would have to be her grandfather in order for her last name to be Gault. Or they may just be relatives descended from a common ancestor, the books only says "descended from the Shaws, who built Ballygally Castle on the shore of Larne in 1625". It seems her mother should be a Shaw, and if you look up the info on James and Isobel Shaw, the rumor is they had a daughter although her name isnt mentioned. I dont know if anyone else possibly has some insight or Im just hoping from someone who shares my same frustration!

I am a descendent of David Irvine and was wondering if you have found anything of interest since your posting last year? I am trying to discover the connection between David and Sophia and their story, especially since she was considered nobility of Scotland. I know the Irvine family worked for Lord Antrim and that could be their connection.

By the way, it was David and Sophia's great-great grandson who first came to America from Ireland and were the first settlers in an area of Virginia. I am curious to find out if you found the answer to your question or any leads that could help you.

I found these links in my searches, which may be helpful for you.

Links found while searching for the kin of Isabella Irvine who married a John Walker (almost certainly in Ulster Province)& whose son James, born about 1820, lived in Aughnacloy, Co Tyrone (migrating with a wife and child to NSW Australia during The Great Famine).
These Walkers grew flax and were linen weavers in Clogher Valley. The Irvine family in above link had linen mills in Larne. I have also come across some Isabel/Isabella names in their line. I have no substantiated link but am working on possibility that the linen industry may be a link, although stations in life may not support this.
Finding early BDM is almost impossible in Ireland. Next stop Tithe Applotment & Rent Roll Books; maybe Estate papers.

So I may or may not be very distantly related. Either way, I hope the links prove useful.
