During some of the past research I have done, I looked at the old records of Who's Who's and Famous names and the only one that I have found on the history of the name go back to England. All of the people listed had been high degreed with credits in literature and education. Most of these English Garnetts were immigrants from Russia. This could fit my family because, disregarding the political issues, the phycial descriptions of large boned, fair haired, well muscled, blonde and blue eyed could fit my family. These people were in England during the 1700 1800's. I hope this helps.

History of the GARNETT Family

I have done a great deal of research on the origins of the GARNET/GARNETT surname and have put together a one-name study for this family. If you are still engaged in writing your research paper, Philip, please get in touch with me and I will be happy to share whatever information might be of use to you.

All of the GARNET/GARNETT families in England can trace their origins back to Normandy in France where their surname was spelled originally as GERNET. Early members of this family arrived in England in the years immediately following the Norman Conquest of 1066 A.D.

The spelling of the family surname evolved during the 1500s and 1600s into GARNET and GARNETT and people bearing this surname are most abundant in the western shires of England---Lancashire, Westmorland, and Cheshire.

The first GARNETT to arrive in North America was Thomas GARNETT who arrived in the Virginia colony in the year 1610. But many GARNETTs also migrated to Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and other parts of the British Empire. I have traced the genealogy of many of these family branches. If you are researching a particular family line of GARNETTs, send me some details and I will check my files for you.

Am looking for information on Richard Willis Garnett born 3 Jun 1818, Barren Cty, KY. Died 1 Apr 1914 St Clair Cty, MO. Married Julia Algood Ledbetter 2 Aug 1860, St Clair cty, MO. She was born 9 Sep 1842, St Clair Cty, MO. Died 1 Aug 1922. Both are buried Kidd's Chapel Cemetary, St Clair Cty, MO. They had 8 children: Josephine Herndon, William Ira, Lucy Lee, Edward (Ned), Nellie Docia, Emily Ermine, Bettie, Richard Millard. I understand his parents were William I Garnett and Emily Willis, both from Virginia. He was a physician having apparently studied with a Dr. John Green in Kentucky. Our information indicated that he was the third of five children. Any information would be appreciated. He would have been my great grandfather; my grandparents were Christopher Woods and Josephine Herndon Garnett.

Hello. Just read your message concerning the history of the Garnett name. Would be most interested to know whether you have any info on the East Riding of Yorkshire contingent. Trying to get more on my paternal grandfather Albert Edward Garnett (born 1894 but don't know where) and died in Hull (I think) 1963. He was married to Jane Elizabeth Moore in 1895 and had 4 children.
I wondered if he or his parents have turned up in any of your research. Sorry - am something of a neophyte at this family tree stuff

Hi, I am a granddaughter of William Brooksbank Garnett (1875-1946), whose family tree I have posted. I don't think we can trace the origins of this branch of the family as far back as to Normandy.
best wishes

Seeking Info On Sons Of Captain James Seddon Garnett

Surnames: Garnett, Seddon, Hopkins, English, Madigan
Hello, I am a descendant of Captain James Seddon Garnett, my Great Grandmother Muriel Madigan nee English was his great great granddaughter. I spent most of my youth on Hopkins Bay which is right across from Garnett Island. I still live in Orillia today, as does my mother Muriel English's granddaughter. My grandmother Madeleine Madigan started this research and 7 years after her passing I am trying to continue it. I found a piece you wrote on Rootsweb June 23, 2003 about the family, however at that time you were uncertain which of his sons (James Cresswell or Joseph) had married a woman Elizabeth and fathered Mary Ann Garnett. I was wondering if you by chance had this information now? I have had some luck tracing the roots of the Garnett side (Back to James Seddon Garnett's grandparents Edward and Betty) but I am wanting to trace Elizabeth also and am hoping if I find out which son married her I may be able to obtain her maiden name and go from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have just begun my search. Thank you, Sara email:
