A Richard Catton was head jailer in the late 18th century in Gibraltar, and later a successful businessman who actually issued copper token coins of his own, about 1810 or so. He might be the son of your Richard. I *think* his name is on the plaque of the Gibraltar Exchange as a founder. There will be references to him in the Gibraltar Govt Archives.

The Gib archivist is Tom Finlayson, email gibarchives@gibnynex.gi
He may not be able to give you the info - it would have to be done by someone sifting through the correspondence - are you planning to visit Gibraltar some time?
Is Catton a relation? *If* I come across anything else, I'll share it with you. Give my regards to Michigan.
Yours
Sam

I think the Gilbratar line is:

Richard Catton (1717) ---> John Catton (1753) ---> Richard Catton (1790) With the Richard Catton from 1790 immigrating to Canada sometime before 1826. (His daughter Elizabeth was born in Canada in 1826).

I know this is an old thread.. but does anyone else have this in their research?
