Would anyone be able to give me directions to a Johnson Cemetery in Wayne Co. On the death cert. for James Morrison it says "Johnson Cem". on his wife, Nancy's it says "Johnson Cem-city" and I think a couple of their children may also be buried there. Would like to visit the cemetery and would appreciate any help. Thanks
KIM: I did retrieve the two DC's you indicated for JAMES and NANCY MORRISON and noticed the burial locations of both individuals and that REGER Funeral Home was in charge. In regards to NANCY MORRISON's with the remark "Johnson Cem-City"
There was a rather large JOHNSON Cemetery that was displaced in 1964 with the building of I-64 in Cabell County/Wayne County line. It is possible that your ancestors were buried that as indicated that they were living in Wayne County/Ceredo District in 1920 which would put them in very close proximity to that cemetery.
I do have ALL the listings of individuals that were "reinterred" to various cemeteries, but your two persons are not listed, in fact, no Morrison's were listed.
I do plan on going to the local library tomorrow and will look for the same names in the Wayne County Cemetery Books....
A son, JERRY MORRISON died on 11-18-1912..DC's were not required until 1917 in WV and there does not appear to be an obituary for him.
Another son, CHARLEY MORRISON died 12-30-1952 in Wayne County. He was buried at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Nicholasville,KY.
There are obits available for both NANCY and JAMES and I will see if they pinpoint a more exact location for their burials.
Will also see if there is a JOHNSON Cemetery in Wayne County.
Thanks so much for the information. It may very well be that they were buried in the cemetery that was moved.
I have found two of their daughters, a Mary Ann Gifford, D-1-4-1949, and her DC says Johnson Cemetery, and a Levina Thompson, D-10-2-1933, but her DC says, Johnston Cemetery. Maybe just an error in spelling.
I appreciate the help. Thanks again.
KIM: The listing I have for the reinterment of the Johnson Cemetery does have a MARY GIFFORD which was in gravespace 319 and was reinterred at Dock's Creek Cemetery Lot No. 420B Gravespace 6. The original map shows that she is surrounded by several unknown graves. 2 to her front and two to her right. The only names in sequence are in grave 313 Mime Spencer and 314 Wm. Spencer.
I found no listing for Levina Thompson.
Note: Over the years, I have found that the records for Dock's Creek are not complete. and it does appear that hundreds of the graves removed were placed at Dock's Creek.
Do you have the obits?
Thanks for checking on the Johnson Cemetery reinterment. I suspect, James and Nancy were there, but without markers. I don't have their obits, but I did recently find a link for the Cabell Co. Library. They have their obit. index for several years, so I plan to write and get copies. Thanks again for the information.
