Can anyone possibly tell me how to check out a name? I've been searching for information on a Franke Boock. Daughter of Detleff Otto Boock and Eva Hauschild. They came to the US from Germany with their two daughters both 9 MOS old. in 1882. Magdalena "Lena" Sophia and Franke. I can't find anything on Franke, but Hannah Frances is listed being born in Germany. It only list the two children. Could Franke be Hannah? Hannah married a Sam Davis and lived in Cheyenne, WY. It list her immigration papers as 1882. I'm lost on this one. Is Franke a nickname for Frances? I find no records for Franke except on the passenger list. Hannah (b. in 1882) is the daughter of Otto and Eva.

It was common for Germans to use their second name as their "Rufname", or called-by name. So Hannah Frances could have been known informally as Franke. If the other facts line up, those could definitely be the same person.

Vorname and Rufname – about German Given Names

The German word Vorname can be literally translated into English as pre-name. This is a name that German parents give to a newborn child. Among Catholics it often happens that a child has more than one Vorname. However, in informal daily communication people usually call a person by just one name, and this is a Rufname. This is a person’s main name, but it often takes the 2d or the 3d place in official papers, as middle names are considered to be more important.

Very often the first name is a Godparents name used to Honor them.

Thanks. I thought as much. Just didn't really have any proof. Do women need naturalization papers?

Re: naturalization of women- until 1920 (or 1921) a womans citizenship depended on her husband. So, if she married an American citizen, she automatically became one. But if she then got divorced, she lost her citizenship. Some women did file for citizenship on their own account.
