Hi to all,
I am seeking info. on a John philip Matthew died in Calcutta age 33 yrs. of Tyfoid Fever, around the year1865. He worked for Messers Cook & Co as an Accountant. He is bured at Episcopal Cemetery. Chowringhee.

I have tried to trace his birth, and have looked up many records at the British Library in london. Can't find a birth for him in India, and also having no success with finding a birth for him in England. I was always under the impression that he was the first of the line to go to India around the late 1840's. He married in 1851( in India)- a Rose Henrietta Rodrigues. So basically now I am stuck! I read his will at the BL but no place of birth was stated. I have been told many records are lost/destroyed etc. both in India, and records incomplete in this country as well.

If by any remote chance anyone else is searching for this family of- Matthew, or others mentioned above. Please contact me.

His son was a Henry Cairns Matthew and his son an Eswald Cairns Matthew (my grandfather). Other surnames I am interested in are: Prince, Rodrigues, Vassillion, also Borthwick and Farrell.

Many Thnaks.

HI, just seen your old message! I am researching them too as I am descendant of J P Matthew's daughter Virginia Violet who married my great grandfather, John Ferrier. I always thought JP Matthew married Catherine Georgina Rodrigues in Bengal on 18 Feb 1856. But there is a child born in 1854. And I have since found a marriage to Rose Henrietta Rodrigues on 9 Aug 1853.

Hi, So pleased to read your message yesterday. I haven't been on Ancestry for a long time, hence the late reply. It's great to hear from a descendant of J.P. Who was my great great grandfather.

My grandfather was Eswald Cairns Matthew. His father was Henry Cairns - my great grandfather. Henry was brother to Virginia Violet - my great great aunt. Guess we are blood relations, and 3rd cousins ?

I've spent hours researching the family mainly, at The British Library in London. I've a lot of info. but still can't pin down where J.P. originated from. Was he born in England, or in India , and was he the first of the Matthew family to journey over to India ? Still have a lot of questions unanswered. My Mother often talked about J.P. being from Lancashire, and in the British army. Haven't been able to trace anything to back that up so far.

Not sure what you know about the family, or what you hope to find out still. I have come across an Ambrose Matthew noted as J.P's father. Don't have a mother's name for him.

Yes, J.P. married both Rose Henrietta Rodrigues (1st wife). After her early death, he went on to marry her sister Catherine Georgina. I've found one child from the 1st marriage, and at least three living children from the 2nd.

I've come across in records J.P's father listed as Ambrose Matthew, but nothing as to who his mother might have been on any documents.

I hope we can keep in touch.

Kind Regards, Anne
