Looking for information on my Smith family in Jasper Co.
Daniel Herbert Smith Sr. md Sallie Gandy
John Q. Smith md Mallie Gandy
Thad David Smith md Arrie Gandy
Are these three Smith men related? Who are their parents?
I know that Herbert and Thad lived in the Gist area, but have been unable to find any records of their lives there. No census, birth or death records. I do know that Daniel and John are buried at Antioch cem. in Buna. Can anyone help?
Any and all info will be arreciated. Will be glad to exchange.

Frances, I am having the same problem. I am the grandson of John Q. Smith and Mallie Rachel Gandy and, while the Gandy line is pretty well researched, the Smiths are perplexing. Apparently there is a John Q and Thad E Smith listed in the same household on a Jasper County census; however, their parents' birth states are different. John Q. Smith was married twice, and Mallie is his second wife. John and Mallie married in 1901 or 1902, and their land straddles both Jasper and Newton counties. I believe John Q. was born December 12, 1865, and Mallie and Sallie were born January 29, 1888. Sallie Gandy is her twin sister. Arrie is a sister. Other Gandy siblings are R. J. (Uncle Dick), Travis, Alpha Bell, and Ina ("Teck"). I'm not sure about Daniel Herbert Smith, Sr. He was quite a character. Our family visited him on several occasions after he and Sallie divorced. His new wife was much younger, and her name was Nettie. They had a son named Johnny Ray Smith when Daniel was in his sixties. Daniel is either a brother or cousin of John Q. and Thad. If he is a brother, he was clearly much younger. Daniel and Sallie's children include Daniel Herbert, Jr., and Callie Smith Biscamp. My mother said more than once that her father (John Q.) always said he was from the "forks of the river." That would have been the Neches River, but not much help in census searching. I am continuing to search. Please let me know if you find anything. paul williamson

I just read your post, even tho it was posted years back. I am wondering if you might know any more about Daniels second wife, Nettie. Like when they married and where.

I don't know any more about Nettie; however, I have been able to determine Daniel Herbert Smith, Sr.'s relationship to John Q. Smith. Let me know if you have other questions. pw

Paul. I'm married to Danny Smith here in Gist. I'm interested in knowing how his Grandfather Daniel was related John. If you don't mind sharing. Danny has no clue. Thanks Vicki

Vicki - Hi to you and Danny. Daniel Herbert Smith, Sr. was John's nephew. Daniel was the son of Aaron Smith (1849-1934) and Calpurnie Ray (1853-1928). John Quincy Adams Smith (my grandfather) was Aaron's younger brother. The parents of Aaron and John were Joel Tom Smith and Harriet Williams. Harriet's father was Stephen Williams (1760-1839)--interesting character. paul

My name is Yolanda Smith. My mother was Sandra L. Smith, daughter of John D. Smith and Grady Haynes-Smith. My mom was born August 22, 1947. If I can recall correctly, John D. Smith was the son of Callie & Jett (John?) Smith(?). My details are limited and I'm not even sure if this is the same family. However, I did see the names of Callie & John in an earlier post. If anyone has information, please contact me at 916-583-2547. Thank you.
