Good Afternoon,
I am having problems finding my Great-Grandfather Gust Dahlquist. Family records show he was born in Smoland, Sweden, on November 11, 1855. Came to the US around 1880-1881, ended up in Sycamore, Illinois. He married Alida Anderson in 1893. and his marriage license list he parents as Charles and Mary Anderson. Family lore has it he was born Sven Gust Carlsson. I have found Sven Gustaf Carlsson born November 11, 1852, in Mistelås, Kronoberg, Sweden. I am lost. The ages he gives in each of the US Census goes back to birth year of 1855. So, I need help. Is Smoland the same as Mistelås, Kronoberg, Sweden, why the 3 year difference in birth year. I have ArkivDigital, I just need to know what area to look in.
Thank you so much,
Kayla Kittleson

Based on the November 11 month and day you profess to be accurate, the name Sven Gustaf Carlsson, the emigration time frame, the parents names, and the residence location of Småland, I believe the Sven you located is your Great Grandfather. The US Census Records may indicate a birth year of 1855 but I would not rely solely on them.

Have you looked at the birth record of Sven born at Mistelås, Kronoberg, Sweden? Mistelås (G) CI:2 (1811-1861) Image 82 / Page 157 (AID: v30461.b82.s157, NAD: SE/VALA/00247). It indicates the parents were Carl (Charles) Andersson and his wife Maria (Mary) Helena Anderson nee Svensdotter and is in the Province of Småland.

I believe you have located the correct person.

Fred

The estate inventory after the "torpare" Carl Andersson of Spångsdal in Mistelås parish was done 8 Mar 1890.

Among the heirs is mentioned the son Gustaf born 1852, residing in North America.

This confirms that he was called Gustaf Carlsson in Sweden.

In the father's estate inventory you can see that in 1889 they had 2 cows, 1 young calf, and 2 sheep.

Still not a large and prosperous farm...

Did everyone have to go through the police to leave, or was Gust being asked/forced to leave the country? Wondering if that is why he changed his name.
Thanks again,
Kayla

The emigration agents handed in their passenger lists to the port police.

Swedes would often take a non-patronymic surname if they became a craftsman, or moved into a town, or when emigrating.

No more reason was needed than wanting a new surname, and before 1901 it was extremely easy, you just told the priest what your new surname was, and he started to use it in the church records (which were also official civil records).
