Need some help, the springer line comes into my family in two places. Daniel C. Bruce married Susan Springer (December 14, 1826 to December 7, 1882). I have no clue as to who Susans parents might have been. The second line of Springers come from Joseph Springer and Nancy McMurtry, their son George married Eliza Jane Bruce. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks email MOM080752@aol.com

In my research I have encountered descendants of Charles Christopher Springer (1658-1738), of Sweden and Delaware, in Fayette and Washington counties, PA, circa 1780 to 1880. A History of Fayette County, by Ellis, published in the 1880's, included one such Springer family. Another related one was in Pike Run Twp., Washington County, PA. This was Jacob Springer, b. 1785, Wilmington, DE, and his wife, Jennie Newkirk. Jacob's sister, Anna, also migrated with her husband, David Jamison, to Washington County in about 1783.

Do you happen to have a Zadoc Springer in your file? He would have married a Susan Leonard Jones.

Hi Carol,

I am also searching for information on Springers from Beaver Co., PA. I have a Nancy (Mary) Springer born about 1807, who's father was Raymond Springer. Nancy married John Cowford (Cowfer/Cowper) July 22, 1831 in Beaver Co., PA. Information from the Western Argus Newspaper.
I would like to find Nancy's mother and siblings. Any chance that your Susan could tie into this family?
Thank you,

I have a Nancy Springer but not a Raymond, not to say they might not be related. The info on the Springers at that time is very slow in coming. I need to start at the 1850 census and work back but some family problems have prevented this for a little while. Will keep an eye for your nancy.

Surnames: Springer Gregg Newkirk
My ggggrandparents where Jacob Springer and Margaret (Peggy) Gregg of East Pike Run Twp., Washington County, PA. Information handed down to me from my grandmother, Olive Jane Springer Richardson, b.1871 in Washington County, PA, gives Jacob's birthplace as Wilmington, DE in 1750. Crumrine's History of Washington County mentions Jacob and Peggy as early residents of the county and has their son John married to Jane Newkirk. In Beers Commemorative Biographical Record of Washington County, Pennsylvania in the biography of one Ella M. Gregg there is reference to both Jacob and Peggy coming from Ireland. So it's not clear if my Jacob Springer has any connection to the Delaware Springers. My information also includes Jacob J. Springer b. 1826 and grandson of the first Jacob Springer and Peggy Gregg. This second Jacob was a brother of my greatgrandfather Caleb Johnson Springer b. 1828 d.1892 and resident of East Pike Run Twp., Washington County PA.

What evidence does anyone have that shows the Delaware Springers coming to Washington County, PA?

The Springer Heirs Hoax has muddied the record concerning descendants of Charles Christopher Springer, but the record seems clear (see "Charles Springer's Family in Swedish History" by Baldwin Maull, and Ruth L. Springer's article in the Delaware Historical Society dated Nov. 1982, p. 85 on the Springer Family) that Jacob Springer, b. 1750 at Christina Hundreds (Wilmington), baptised 23 Feb. 1750 (H. T. Bk 3, pg. 809) m. Margaret Gregg. Jacob d. abt. 17 Apr. 1817 in E. Pike Run Twp., Washington County, Pa. (Prob. of Will, Wash. Co. Bk. 3, p. 145). There is also a note in Ruth L. Springer's article that "A family letter written in 1832 says that Margaret (Gregg) Springer continued to live in E. Pike Run Twp."). So, it looks like Ruth Springer did some actual research on Jacob's origin. I obtained Ruth Springers two-part article on the Springer Family directly from the Delaware Historical Society. As you must know, Springer is a German name (Charles Christopher Springer's father was a German who married a Swedish lady of the court of the Queen (Hedwig Elenora) of Sweden and Charles was a result of that union). It is highly unlikely that a Jacob (James) Springer came directly from Ireland. There was a Jacob Springer who emigrated aboard an English ship in 1737, but he was a German and was 32 yrs. old when he arrived in Philadelphia to take the pledge to the King of England.
