My grandmother was Era DeLay, dau of James William DeLay Mary Louise Lovinggood;
James William DeLay (I have seen it shown as Jason, but it is James) was the son of James Milton DeLay Frances Jane Gober. James Milton DeLay was the son of Seth DeLay and Mary Williams. I show Seth Delay b. abt. 1765 in England d. abt. 1830 in GA. He married twice, five children by the first wife - name unknown:
Jessee Wilson 1801
James A. Abt. 1803
Rebecca Abt. 1805
Hiram Russell 12/12/1806
Penelope 10/5/1811
Second wife Mary Williams m. abt 1812 in SC
Three children:
James Milton b. 5/15/1825 d. 3/5/1908 Holley Springs, GA
Labon Patrick 8/331/1817
Francis M. 5/19/1828

I would love to fill in the gaps and hope you might have some of the pieces. We may be related on two sides.

Chuck, of course you are correct. Here's a brief lineage:

Seth Delay b. abt 1765 England, d. abt 1830, Jackson Co., GA. Wife unknown. Had 5 children that I know of, including James A. Delay b. 1804 Kershaw Co., SC, d.17 October 1855 in Delay, Jackson Co., GA. (Delay was the name of the town for a while. Was also known as Barber's Creek; currently known as Statham.) James' wife was Margaret Duncan, b. abt 1806 in, we think, Union Co., SC, d. abt 1881 a Delay, Jackson Co., GA. (Don't know her father's name, for sure.) She and James were married 23 December 1825 in Clarke Co., GA.

James and Margaret had 9 children, including MAry Temperance Delay, b. 28 January 1833 at Barbers Creek, Jackson, GA, d. 5 January 1909. She m. James S. Ferguson; he died 3 June 1864--he was mortally wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness in VA during Civil War in May 1864 but managed to return home to die from his wounds. I have no additional info about Mary Temperance and James Ferguson.

My greatgrandmother was James' and Margaret's youngest daughter and sister of Mary Temperance: Sarah Jane Delay, b. 3 February 1847; she m. James Wesley Willard 24 April 1870. Sarah Jane d. 6 March 1833.

James and Sarah Willard had 7 children. My grandmother, Alice Lavinia Willard, was the 6th child. She m. John W. Poulnot(t). (It is spelled with one "t" and with two "t's". Original spelling was with one "t" but the ones who came to GA appear to have picked up an additonal "t".)

My mother Daisy Marie Poulnot(t) m. Lawrence E. Pike.

My name is Lawrence E. Pike, Jr.

Sorry for the mixup in my earlier message. Sometimes I have to re-do everything two or three time to get it right... :)

If you want to discuss further, just e-mail me direct. It is easier than using this message board for correspondence.

Look forward to sharing additional info with you and other Delay cousins.

I am a descendant of Rebecca Delay who married twice, the first to Roland Vaughan and the second to David Hodges. I am also searching for the parents of Seth. I know he was from SC before coming to Ga. and the only early Delay I can find there is an Alexander Delay. Have you run across this man?

Seth DeLay

I haven't yet run accross Alexander. The info that I have says Seth was born in England @ 1765. I also have some family bio data that says two brothers originally settled in Charleston, SC. They were supposed to have been French Huguenots. E-mail me direct at and we can exchange data.
