I am interested in the history of the Gano family which lived in and around the area of Winchester VA. My grandmother was Annita Mae Gano, father was John Gano, mother was Belle Hovermale Gano. Would love to hear from you if you have any info on my family.
Diane: I have a John Gano b. 8 Mar 1821 in New Jersey whose parents were Samuel and Margaret Hoaglund Gano. Family records say that he died during the civil war. The only John Gano in New Jersey I have ever found civil war records for was the one in your post who was in the 1st regiment. If your John and mine are the same person I have much info to share on his siblings and parents.
It certainly sounds like my family. John volunteeredMay 22 1861 after his wife died in childbirth. Her name was Zinah (Wagner?), He was left with 6 children- George, Sarah Cahterine, My great, great grandmother, Mary J. Anderson, Peter, and Samuel. All born in N.J.
Any information you can share would be very helpful.
So sorry, this is not my family. The Gano's in my family originated in NJ from the early 18oo's. Some of the family moved to Ohio, Pa, and New York City.
Thanks for the inquiry
According to notes made by my mother-in-law this Gano family claims to be related to the Rev John Gano. I have not been able to prove this connection. Samuel could be a child of Steven Gano and Catherine Beavers although this is speculative and I have also found a reference to a Jacob Gano b. 1787 d, 1849 m. 1811 to Jemina Hoagland b. 1786 d. 1833 and have wondered if these men might have been brothers who married sisters.

I have more information on Richard's descendants that I can share.
This family might be a relative but not the family I'm looking for.
My G.G. grandfather, John Gano, married a Zinah Wagoner from Flemington NJ and they lived there until he was killed in Va. in 1862.
thanks for your input
Would appreciate it if you could clarify for me what info conflicts for your John Gano and the John in my tree who according to the family history was a soldier who died during the civil war. I've only been able to locate one John Gano from New Jersey (yours) in the civil war records who served so I want to be certain what facts definately eliminate your John. Thanks for you help solving this puzzle.
It seems we ARE retated, afteral.

Glad to get details on another line of Samuel and Maraget's descendents. Do you have any ideas about or information on Samuel's parents? I've hit a brick wall with this and can't connect these Gano's to the revolutionary war patriot my mother-in-law claimed the family was related to.
