Richard William Bustard Married 1866 in Athlone

Surnames: Bustard; Brown; Cantwell, Norton, Scanlon
I am trying to find out who Richard William Bustard married in Athlone, Country Westmeath in 1866. Women also married at that same time include: Jane Brown; Bridget Cantwell, margaret Norton, Ellen Scanlon. But I am at a loss to know how to match the right person to Richard! Anyone have any ideas on that?

Richard was in the Army, aged 19 (his parents are not listed on the documentation, so maybe married in secret). He remarried in 1883 after a long time in the Army and it was noted he was a Widower.

If anyone knows how to discover the name of the lucky bride, I would be very happy to learn!

With many thanks

Hello Toucano,

I located the marriage index for Richard William Bustard and Margaret Norton at the Latter Day Saints (LDS) website at:

The index does contain an error however, as it states the marriage took place on 18 September 1866 in Athlone, “Roscommon,” rather than Athone, Westmeath.

The index also shows that Richard’s father was Thomas Bustard and that Margaret’s father was Thomas Norton.

The index follows:

Hello Dave,
well, I must say that you have been exceedingly generous in tracking down this information for me and solving a mystery that has been bugging me!

I did look in all these records but didn't find what you found - you must be very experienced in genealogy, whereas I am just a beginner. Thanks very much indeed.

I found that on his service record, Margaret a supposed daughter is down as his next of Kin, but figured that maybe she was from their first marriage (he married again in 1883). Margaret Norton died because when Richard married again his marriage certificate says he was a Widower ....

Once again, many thanks indeed.
