My research indicates that all people with the name Cromarty are related and that the name began around 1450 with a John Urquhart who went to South Ronaldsay, Orkney. He would have been known as John O'Cromarty, which is still the tradition in Orkney, with the O' eventually dropped. Old Cromarty headstones show the three boars heads, the crest of Clan Urquhart. The current Urquhart Chief has officially recognised Cromarty as a sept of Clan Urquhart. I would be pleased to hear from other Cromartys.

Hi, My mum is a Cromarty. Her family was from Holy Island
(Lindisfarne) off the Northumbrian coast in the north of England. The family were almost all fishermen. I've traced their tree back to the mid 1700's but haven't found the original Cromarty on the Island yet. There was a story that they came to the Island after the 45' rebellion. Have you heard anything?

Hello Douglas, There was a large group of Cromartys at Lindisfarne, but I do not know how they came to be there. I have some documents, but have not yet looked through them all. If there is anything on Lindisfarne I will let you know. Best wishes, Susan Cromarty

During genealogy research, I found that one of my ancestresses Alida Thomasdaughter Crommetie (1671-1749), Bergen, Norway is mentioned to be of "ancient Scottish nobility family". Several spellings occur in the records of Bergen (a o Crometi, Cromety, Crometie) In Orkney records I see cromertie, and cromerty. The Norwegian-Danish spelling without "r" is natural as the "r" is not pronounced. Her Father Thommes Crommetie was buried 1734 inside the Cathedral (a nobility privilegiie). I have not yet been to Bergen to investigate if there are any tombstones left or any coat of arms, there. But I will within the next year, as it is only 2 hours by air from Uppsala, Sweden where I live.
From other sources I have experienced that Two Cromartys emigrated from Orkney to Bergen: William Thomason C (1631) and Thomas C (1639).

Do you know why the three boars are not used in the present Urquhart coat of arms?

Hi, Lars. The coat of arms of Clan Urquhart does have three boars heads. Perhaps you were looking at the badge. Look at this website http://www.clanurquhart.com/. (The banner on the homepage incorporates the coat of arms.)

My grandfather was David Cromarty Thompson from the Orkney Isles. He married Annie Thompson (now my married name).
He was a sea commordore.

My husband and l were at the Clan Gathering in Edinburgh this weekend (July 26). I was thinking about getting a kilt and was wondering what tarten to order?

Cromarty's are recognized as part of the Urquhart Clan. There are a couple of Urquhart tartans from which you can choose. This is the tartan page of the clan website: http://www.clanurquhart.com/tartan.htm. (See also http://www.scottish-tartans-world-register.com/find_tartan.a....)

You might consider wearing your husband's tartan. (Thompsons are associated with Clan MacTavish.)

Hello
I was born Melva Cromarty in London 1952. I have little understanding about the family name and have heard various things about how the name relates to the Scots region. Your information is of interest and I'd love to know if you are into tracing family trees etc. I'm very new to doing this and seem to be wandering a bit aimlessly at the moment!
