I am researching the Avern family of Rowimngton in Warwickshire, according to Joy Woodall's book on Rowington published 1972 'The malt house was occupied by the Avern family from 1548-1853.

Does anyone know of them?
Or have any links?
All info welcome.

My GGG Grandmother was Rebecca Avern. She and her twin brother Isaac were baptised in Rowington on April 18, 1791. Their parents were James & Marian. At this point I have lots of other Averns in Rowington but have not been able to prove if this James & Marian are the same parents who baptised children as James & Mary, or James & Mary Ann, or are the James Avern and Ann Burdon who were married in Rowington in Nov 1776. Are you looking for a specific Avern? Rebecca and Isaac were listed in a census as being "Millers" for an occupation, by then living in Southam, Warwickshire.

Hi Teresa,
I have the transcription of parish registers for Rowington 1612-1812 I think, if you'd like any lookups let me know.
My email si:

About 'my' Averns so far I have a marriage + a few baptisms int he 1680's + 1690's now there are a lot of Averns around at this time + unfortunately I cannot connect them up yet.
The family is old in Rowington + I think it must all be connected as Avern is an uncommon name + Rowington was + still is a small place.
In a book call 'Anne to Hroca' about rowington, it mentions an old building called the Malt house, and then says the AVERN family inhabited this house from 1546-1853, I would love to connect this but cannot so far.
We may work out a connection sometime, anyway look forward to hearing from you

Hi David
I wonder if you could help me?
I think my G G Grandfather was a William Avern who was christened in Rowington in 1795. His parents were James & Mary-Ann.
They were married in Warwickshire about 1777. would you be able to tell if that was also in Rowington

Hi Margaret,

There is no marriage in the rowington parish register for James and mary-ann near 1777, however there is the following entry:

Married James Avern & Ann Burdon of this P. 16 Nov 1776.
Could this be mary-ann?

Good luck in your search

The Rowington Parish registers show the following, I am leaning towards thinking that they are all the same parents, but no proof, not even separate or multiple James burials to go with them.
marriage James Avern & Mary Ann Burdon on Feb 25, 1844
Elizabeth baptized 14 May 1777; parents James & Mary
James bap. 18 June 1780; parents James & Mary
Mary bap. 8 Feb 1782; James & Mary
twins Isaac & Rebecca bap 18 Apr 1791; James & Marian
Joseph bap. 23 Oct 1793; James & Mary
William bap. 4 Jan 1795; James & Mary-Ann
James born about 1758 died 14 Mar 1827
Mary Ann born about 1754 died Feb 25, 1844

Is the following your William?
Descendants of William Avern

1 William Avern b: 1794 in Rowington, Warwickshire, England d: Bef. 1881
.. +Elizabeth b: 1796 in Baginton, Warwick, England d: Bef. 1881
.. 2 Caroline Avern b: 1825 in Stivichall, Warwick, England
.. 2 Clement Avern b: 1834 in Coventry, Warwick, England
.. 2 Ellen Avern b: 1831 in Coventry Grandborough, Warwick, England
.. 2 Thomas Avern b: 1836 in Coventry, Warwick, England

Hi Teresa & David
Thanks for your replies

The things I know for definite are:-

Great grandfather "William Avern" born in Coventry 1854
Great great grandfather "William Avern" married Maria Hayes in Leicester in 1846 aged 25 (1881 census says he was born in Coventry) Marriage certificate says his father was another "William Avern"

I am now just clutching at straws. I have found a "William Avern" who died in Coventry in 1871 aged 77 which would tie in with the "William Avern" who was christened in Rowington in 1795 son of James & Mary-Ann

I hope this all makes sense (why did they all have to be called "William"
