My great grandparents and all their children came from Castlecomer, Kilkenny, to the US in the 1860s. In Ireland they lived on Wandesforde property which covered many townlands and the coal mines in the area. The Topographical Dictionary of 1837 by Lewis has detailed information and is
found in most genealogy libraries and family history centers. My family lived on both Skehana and Firoda townlands northwest of Castlecomer and I believe there were Brennans found on one or both. If you like I could look up my research for the Tithe Applotment and Griffiths Valuation
and send you what I have in my notes. Good luck.

Wandesford assisted emigrations

Hello, While on a genealogical trip to Kilkenny a few years ago I purchased a very useful book written by William Nolan called "FASSADININ, Land, Settlement & Society in South-East Ireland 1600-1850". The book does an excellant job of covering the Wandesford demesne. He was one of the few landed gentry who actually assisted emigration from about 1840 through 1853 to Canada the USA and Australia. The book also covers this, but, unfortunately does not give names. I contacted the author who indicated that very good records were kept by the Wandesford family on all individuals they assisted to emigrate. These records are now housed in the basement of the National Library in Dublin. When I tried to
access them I was told that very little of the estates papers had been indexed and that until they were public access was restricted. Very discouraging to me since my great-grandfather also left Castlecomer during 1842 leaving his mother and probably a brother and a sister living on the John Brennan Estate at Woodview in Gorteen. I'm certain there must be some way that those emigration papers could be located, but it will probably be years before that occurs. Hope this has helped a little bit. Purchasing the book should be rather easy. I bought mine at the Rothe House in Kilkenny City and I'm sure they probably still carry it. It's certainly a book every researcher in Kilkenny and particularly the northern area around Castlecomer should have. Mike O'Shea, Norfolk Virginia, USA

I have read Mr. Nolan's book and sought to review the Wandesford papers in the National Library in Dublin. I was able to receive a permit after a lengthy application, but ran out of time to study them next visit to begin again. But the point is that in 1995 the Library would provide authorization, taking a couple of days, but I would love to do it. My ancestors were Dreaper/Edge/Houghton/Tracey were
Church of Ireland. They married Catholic Shortalls, Fowlers/Lesters and setlled in Ontario, Canada 1820-1840.
Most of family from Castlcomer,Kilkenny. The Lesters from Castle Dungarvan Kilkenny or Waterford I am seeking links to all the above T.F Draper Connecticut, USA

I think I can help you on your search. My great-grandmother was Annebelle Ryan who was born in Girardsville, PA. Her parents were Martin Ryan(from Castelcomer, Kilkenny County, Ireland) and Mary Elizabeth Ryan (from Wexford County, Ireland). There were many brothers and sisters. I have a family bible and other relatives who are over in Ireland now doing research. Please let me know if you are interested or if you think we have a connection. It would be so good to find family.

I'm also very interested in seeing the list of those assisted to emigrate from the Wandesforde estate in Kilkenny in the 1840s. Does it mention people by name - Nolan's book suggests that it does, given that payments were made to these people. Anyone got this list??
