See "Burke County Heritage" - a book available at the Burke County library for details regarding both Dr. Joseph Dobson Sr. as well as others in the Dobson family tree.

Dr.Joseph Dobson, Sr. came from London England to Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1753. In 1768, in addition to his medical practice, he operated a private school on his plantation on the Catawba River in McDowell/Burke COunty. He died July 21, 1791. He and his wife Anne are buried in the Dobson family cemetery overlooking Lake James on Duke Power land. The cemetery is on a hillside behind what is now a small camp (like a church camp). It is accessible via many gravel roads and a short walk.

Dr. Joseph Dobson had a son Joseph and a son John. John was killed during the Rev. War at the Battle of Ramseur's Mill.

Joseph Dobson married Mary Mackey b Dec. 10, 1756, Chester Co., PA; d Dec. 31 1845, McDowell Co. NC; buried in the Dobson Cemetery. The marriage took place on March 18, 1779 McDowell Co. Joseph was b June 4, 1756, London, England; d Nov 21, 1836; buried in the Dobson Cemetery, McDowell Co., NC; Joseph was a private in the NC Militia and was placed on the pension roll of US Government July 12, 1833.
