All of the children of Osvaldo and Maria have died, Gilda Belfi Palange and Dominic Belfi died within a week of each other about three weeks ago. I am the daughter of Rachele Belfi as is the Shirley that has written on this board. I have been to Vodo di Cadore and I plan on returning in 2006. Send me a private e-mail at and I will return your inquirey with more information.

Surnames: Belfi/Talamini
Hello! I wonder if you can help us. We also have a Belfi/Talamini in Cleveland connection.

My mother-in-law's parents were Matteo Belfi and Vera Emma (Elvira?) Talamini. Matteo was born 19 Sep 1894 in Padua, Italy. She does not know the names of his parents. Vera Talamini was born 9 March 1896 in New York City. Her parents were Thomas Talamini (died ca 1961) and Jaqueline (last name unknown).

Vera Talamini and Matteo Belfi were married on 23 Feb 1925 in New York City and later resided in Cleveland for many years before relocating late in life to their daughter's home in California. I understand that Matteo laid small ceramic tiles, specializing in staircases or something like that. Vera and Matteo Belfi had two daughters, LaVerne and Marian.

Does this family sound familiar?

This is very familiar! Matteo lived within walking distance of my mother's (Rachele Belfi) home in the Brooklyn suburb of Cleveland on Biddulph Avenue. Mom and I would often stop and talk to him when we went for walks. My mother would tell me that he was a cousin of her father's. The family originated in Vodo di Cadore, Provincia di Belluno in the Northeast section of Italy. The name of the church where the Belfi family attended is St. Lucy. Since my grandfather died suddently in his early forties, I never have figured out the connection between the "cousins" in the Cleveland area, I have discovered that Matteo had several brothers and sisters in the Cleveland area - all of whom were called cousins by my mother. (Mom died in 1990 at the age of 76.) They were Albert (wife of Delma nee Shire), Matthew, Mrs. Lena Belfi Tognon, Mrs. Marietta Belfi D'Olivio, Severino, and Guido There is also a Guido Belfi in Cleveland who was my mother's brother so don't get the two confused in your search. Both Severino and Guido were still in Italy. Also in Cleveland there were another set of "cousins" from another Belfi family, Gerado was the husband of Lina (nee Crespi) and a Vincenzo Belfi whose wife was Lucy Gemma Belfi, a Mary Belfi, the mother of Amelia Marcks, Another cousin was married to a John Losego who eventually moved to California. He had a brother, Alphonso who married a Lucia Belfi.

The Belfi family was known in the Clevleand area for its stone work. There is a beautiful cemetery where all of the famous Cleveland industrialist are buried. It is called Lakeview Cemetery. Some of the first Belfi's in Cleveland did the monuments for the cemetery. I will send you a copy of an article on their work in the cemetery.

The northern Italians in Cleveland were known for their work in Terrazzo, Tile and Marble. I believe Matteo did Terrazzo work as did my father.

I would be most grateful if you could figure out the connections between the two families and share that with me.

I will send you more later.

Please note that Maria Della Libera was not on the same boat as her husband, Osvaldo. That was another Maria Belfi
