Hi Alyson,
I've already replied to one of your other emails, but just a quick note to let you know that my grandfather wasn't born in Samoa but in New Zealand, but he did die in Samoa when my father was barely 5 years old.

Hope that helps a little.

Cheers.

Alyson, if you are still there (all your emails are old) I have just found this posting and I think that my grandmother Edith Emily Jessop must be the younger sister of your Richard Thomas Jessop; she was born in Auckland New Zealand in 1879 and her parents were Richard Jessop and Mary Reid Watson. Apart from believing that Richard was from Devon, England, and Mary from Melbourne Australia, I know nothing about her family; any information you have would be most welcome. Where does the Samoan connection come in? Can you enlighten me? thanks, Philippa

Hello Gwendoline, I hope you are still there; I have also replied to a posting of Alyson's which I have only just found. From her information I realised that your grandfather Richard Thomas Jessop must be the older brother of my grandmother Edith Emily Jessop. Sadly I never met her as she died in 1937. Richard and Edith were both born in Auckland and their parents were married there in 1873, but you already know that? Is there anything else you can tell me about the family? Our fathers must have been first cousins! Regards, Philippa

Richard Thomas Jessop's father was Richard Jessop born abt 1842 in Tavistock, Devon, England. His parents were Richard Jessop and Elizabeth. I am basing this on Richard Jessop's children's names. His brother's and sister's born in Tavistock were Thomass, Elizabeth M, Sarah E, Hubert Wesley. (Source 1861 Census) His first three children, born in NZ, were Richard Thomas, Elizabeth and Hubert Wesley. Too much of a coincidence for it not to be the righ Richard I think.

Funny thing those Census records. 1851 shows Richard Jessop from Tavistock but Elizabeth Maillen is from Okehampton and both are living in Okehampton. The 1841 census has both of them from Okehampton. Born around 1816 but no trace to date of his parents. Found a few other little snippets too on Richard Jessop. Apprenticed to Richard Colling on 30 Jan 1828 under the trade of tinman & brazier in Tavistock, Devon, England (assuming this is the same Richard Jessop but too much of a coincidence being around 12 years of age, in a trade that leads to ironmongery and in Tavistock, so he may originally be from Tavistock. Reference is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/a2a/records.aspx?cat=028-...). Married on the 9th instant at Sticklepath 9/7/1839, in the Wesleyan Chapel, by the Rev. J. Stote, Mr. Richard Jessop, ironmonger, to Miss Elizabeth Maillen, both of Okehampton, in the presence of Mr. Newton, the registrar, and other respectable persons of the neighbourhood. Died Feb 21st 1890. Buried at All Saints Churchyard, Okehampton.
