In response to the post of Brent Tarter asking for early Virginia genealogies
published prior to 1860, the earliest I have seen is "A Catalogue of the
Descendants of Thomas Watkins of Chickahomomony Virginia; who was the common
ancestor of many of the families of the name in Prince Edward, Charlotte and
Chesterfield Counties" by Francis Nathaniel Watkins which was published in
1852 in New York City by J. F. Trow, printer.

The interesting thing about Watkins was that he sent out questionnaires to
people which were like family group sheets of today. Many of the letters he
received in connection with this genealogy are part of the George Brown Goode
Papers 1796-1903 Accession #24813 in the Archives Division of the Virginia
State Library.

I have used this collection and it is fascinating. An example of the type of
material he received is the following abstract of a letter from A. Watkins of
Charlotte Co...."my father John was next to the youngest child & born in April
1725.  My father had several sisters the eldest Elizabeth married Mr. Lacy...
another sister m. a Sims...another sister m. Mr. Milton [Melton], another m.
James Adams of Charlotte...another m. an Allen..."[the letter goes on and on-
tells about the Rice family in Jessamine Co., Ky]
