CRIDLAND,JOHN FREDERICK SPENCER, b.Aug.1860,son of JOSEPH JOHN CRIDLAND & SARAH ELIZABETH STONE GLOVER CRIDLAND. His father was a solicitor, Bedford Row, London and so was JFSC. His Will names his wife as ALICE MAUD but I cannot find record of the marriage. On the 1881 census he was still living with his father and his step-mother, FANNY FAIRFAX (ATKINS)CRIDLAND in London. He died in South Kensington Dec. 1951. Would appreciate info. on the family name of his wife and on their marriage and possible children. His sister was FRANCES ELIZABETH CRIDLAND who never married and died before her father. Date of death was 20 Oct. 1891, Dover, Kent.

More about the John Hurlbert Glover thread. Yes! you did reach me, even after 10 years! Thank you so very much for the lineage of Sarah Elizabeth Stone Glover who was the first wife of my grandfather, Joseph John Cridland. He died 18 Oct. 1901, Uptom-Cum-Chalvey, Bucks. Our family tales always connected to the Librarian at Windsor Castle...and it was true!
You likely know of the son and daughter of John and Sarah E.S. but if not please do get in touch. (From Canada via the first son by the second wife & more.)

New info that I have just come across:
John Hulbert Glover was born on 26 December 1792 and baptised at St George’s Hanover Square in Middlesex on 27 January 1793. His parents were John and Elizabeth Glover.
My husband is descended from John Hulbert Glover's 2nd son Frederick, so I have lots more info about Frederick.

Here is a bit of fascinating info:

According to a long account following his death, given in the local newspaper, the Windsor and Eton Express, of 21 June 1860, John Hulbert Glover was the son of a footman to King George III, his grandfather was a bookbinder, and his mother a book sewer in the bindery department of the Royal Library. Windsor Library ( holds copies of the local newspaper. The Royal Archives does not have any record of John Glover’s grandfather or mother, but has some references to a George Glover, who was a Footman to Queen Charlotte from c.1774 probably until his death on 19 July 1792.

John Glover’s successor as Librarian recorded that he had originally been an apprentice to the Binder in King George III’s library at Buckingham Palace, and was trained by the then Librarian as one of his Assistants. In 1823 King George IV presented his father’s library to the British Museum, and Glover, along with his some of his colleagues moved to the Museum to continue working on the library. However, King William IV set up a new Royal Library at Windsor Castle, and Glover returned to work on this, first as Assistant Librarian and Keeper of Prints and Drawings, and finally, from July 1836, as Librarian and Keeper of the Prints and Drawings. He continued in this position until his death at his house adjoining Buckingham Palace on 23 May 1860, his death being reported to the Queen by his son, the Reverend John Hulbert Glover. Queen Victoria noted in her Journal that day: “…Deeply grieved to hear that poor good Mr Glover died at 2 today. A great loss. He was most kind, devoted, thoroughly trustworthy, painstaking, and very loyal in his devotion to us all.”. John Glover was buried at Slough.

Also, there are 3 inserts in the Times (25 May, 26 May, 31 May 1860)wrt his death.

John Hulbert Glover's 8 page will makes interesting reading. Didn't realize that the press were onto it. Although his father (also) John Hulbert Glover who died 23May1860 left upto £4000, and his mother who died on 9Nov1864 left under £2000, I suspect that the bulk of John Hulbert Glover's money came via his grandfather Wm Toone, a solicitor, who died 30 Oct 1849.
Wm Toone wrote several reference books incl "The Magistrates Manual", advertised from 1821-1837 into it's 4th edition. Don't know how much Wm Toone left but his library of books was bequeathed to his 3 eldest grandsons Jonn, Frederick and Wm, & after his wife's death the residue (with freehold & leasehold estates in Middlesex Kent & Surrey) was divided between his son Wm Sydney Toone and his dau Sarah Glover. Wm Sydney Toone married twice but had no children and when he died on 28 Apr 1883, left the residue to his nephew John Hulbert Glover (jnr).
