I have a photo from my grandmother, taken in a cemetery in Lincoln, Logan County, Illinois. Written at the bottom of the picture is "1887 Ball Lot, Lincoln, Ill." There is what looks like a curb with the engraving J. S. Ball. On either side are raised markers with the date 1906. There are two gravestones behind the J. S. Ball engraving. According to the family history, Joanna Taylor Ball, d. 1887, Amanda S. Ball, d. 1906, and John Sanford Ball, d. 1915, are all buried in the Union Cemetery, Lincoln, IL. I would like to know if the tombstones are still there, and if anyone can verify this information. Thank you.

Jo: My best friend is a Logan County "Ball", I'm not sure if she is from your "Ball" family line or the other one that was in Logan County. She once told me there were two main "BALL" Families here, but they were unrelated lines. So I forwarded your query to her, she's not doing genealogy, but maybe she has seen these graves or knows the names. I'll let you know when she replies to me. Good Luck!

Barb, Just following up on your reply of about a year ago, in which you said that you have a friend who may have some information about the cemetery where John Ball and his two wives are buried in Lincoln. I wondered if you have received any information from her. Thanks.

Joan, I happened to think that I have the Union Cemetery book. I looked and there is a listing of these Balls:
Page 16 of Union Cemetery Book by Decatur Genealogy Society 1973.:

Ball:
*Nellie Watson 1884-1926
*Mother 1845-1887
*Father 1834-1915
*Mother 1847-1906
*Sanford 1889-1928
GATEPOST 1906-J.S. Ball
+Johannah b. Indiana d. July 16, 1887 aged 42 yrs
+Amanda E. d. Jan 20, 1906 aged 58 yrs 5 mo 24 da.
+John S. d. Nov 16, 1915 aged 81 yrs. 3mo 27da.

Thats the only Balls buried there as of 1973. I'm sure these graves would still be there. Union Cemetery Is very large!! And it is well cared for. I'll ask my Friend if she knows where in the cemetery they are, but other wise you'd have to get the grounds keeper to show location or you'd have a big job hunting. Though the curb and gatepost would make the grave stand out more....Were you wanting photos of stones? Or were you planning to visit? Hope this helps. Barb

Barb, I was delighted to get your reply. I can identify all the people listed in the Union Cemetery Book except Nellie Watson. I do have a photo of the curb and gatepost with some stones behind it, but that's all. A better photo of the stones would be nice. It would be interesting to know where in the cemetery they are buried. I would love to be able to make a trip to see the cemetery, but that's not likely. In 1999 I was in northern Illinois researching my husband's family, and that would have been the time that I should have done this. Again, thanks for your help.

Jo

That would be great. I wasn't sure whether you lived close to the cemetery or not. If you are a "picture taker" and would like to take some photos of the graves, I will be glad to reimburse you. Hope to hear from you sometime later. Thanks again. Jo
