I am looking for the clan to which the family name MacSkimming belongs.

From "The surnames of Scotland" by G.F. Black p. 564:

"..first know reference to a McSkimming, Thomas Mackskimming in Auchreicht 1684. The name occurs in GALLOWAY in 1684 as McSeumin, McSimyn, and McSkimming (parish). David McSkimming in Cairandlarie 1757 (Wigtown)."

Dear KatieDel,

I would prefer to have sent this message privately, but you haven't created a profile to indicate the best way to contact you. Lots of SKIMMINGs, McSKIMMINGs, CUMMINGs, etc., in Wigtownshire, so here goes:

I see that you have genealogy interests in Dumfries and Galloway, which includes the old county known as Wigtownshire in the southwest corner of Scotland. My name is Mary Richardson, and I administer the free Rootsweb mailing list for Wigtownshire. We usually have around 500 folks subscribed to our list, all with specific interests in Wigtownshire and nearby Kirkcudbrightshire parishes, particularly Minnigaff. Our group, which includes locals, is most congenial, and many are quite willing to assist others in their Wigtownshire research.

We’d be very happy to have you join us. Administrivia including subscription instructions are at

You might also like to check out “The Wigtownshire Pages,” which was built by our listers to complement our mailing list:

I do hope you’ll decide to subscribe and post your interests at Please contact me if you have any questions – I can be reached privately at You can also reach me and the other Wig list administrators, Crawford MacKeand and Bruce McDowall, at
