I received an update, to my last two messages on 5/11, from my father regarding the Baird surname. After speaking to my father, I discovered that Westly Baird (my great great grandfather)was a plantation owner in a small town named Baird, MS in Bolivar County. This town was probably named after Westly Baird which was common at the time. This town was also near another town called Cleveland. I recently found out that Westly Baird was of mixed heritage: White and Native American. I also learned that many plantation owners where often full blooded Native Americans. Other plantation owners were either full Caucasion or Caucasion mixed with Native American. I learned that many of the Native Americans that inhabited the upper south, namely Bolivar County in MS, were of the Choctaw and Chicasaw tribes. However, I am currently trying to determine which tribe Westly Baird was from. Westly Baird was married to Edna Baird and they gave birth to Janie Baird, my great grandmother. This is the same individual I mentioned in my two previous messages on 5/11. Janie Baird was born in 1873 in Baird, MS and died in Baird, MS around 1911. She was married to my great grandfather Robert (Tony) Griffin who was born a slave in 1862. Robert and Janie had three children Nellie (my grandmother), Leola, and Alice. Nellie Griffin is the mother of John Griffin, my father, who provided me with this information. My father received this information from his mother Nellie before she died. My father John Griffin, also provided me with photographs of the extinct town of Baird, MS which was barron with old houses and an old U.S post office. This U.S. post office had the old address and zip code still on the front of the building. The address read "Baird, MS" with a zip code listed as "38724". The photographs were taken by my father when he visited Baird, MS a few years ago. The pictures were of wide open fields that were vacant, possibly old plantation land. According to my father, there is not much left of this town. Please contact me at my e-mail address if this information sounds familiar or it you have any information concerning Westly or Janie Baird.

I grew up in Baird, ms and my family owns a lot of the surrounding farmland. My great grandfather was actually in charge of phone lines between the Baird family in Baird and the Baird family in Inverness. Will have to check my records for you. By the way, the town is located outside of indianola in sunflower county. At one time, it was largest town in county due to rr and river access.
