Hutchinsons of Ireland, 1790-1800

Hutchinsons of Ireland, 1790-1800

Surnames: Hutchinson, Metcalf, Deutsch, Wiggins, Winans
My ancestor, William Metcalf, d. 1831, NYC, married Eleanor Thistle Hutchinson ca. 1819. They had 3 children, Eleanor, Anne and William, and Eleanor Thistle died in 1827. In her death notice, Alfred Winans was mentioned, and, according to various trees, he married Mary Ann Hutchison King, a widow, in 1824 in NYC. Alfred Lincoln Winans is said to have migrated from NYC to McKean Co., PA, and then to Topeka, KS. The guardianship papers for Eleanor Thistle's children name Absolom Hutchinson as an uncle. I believe this is the same Absalom Hutchinson of Bradford, McKean Co., PA, who moved there in 1832.

Anne, the daughter, is said to have died shortly after her father. Eleanor married John Deutsch. William, 5 years old, was put under the guardianship of Henry Wiggins and taken to Michigan.

Mary Ann is said to be from Dublin, Ireland; Absalom from Cootehill, Ireland. Eleanor Thistle was from Ireland, b. ca 1798.

Does anyone have any records on the parents of these people? Am I off base in believing that these 3 are siblings? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'd be happy to share what I have.

Carolyn Hoffman

Hello! My name is Andrew Hutchinson, I live in Troy, Ohio, and I'd heard stories of my ancestor Absalom Hutchinson who came from Cootehill, Ireland. God bless Google. :-) May I ask who you are, and if we may be related in some way?

Hello, Andrew,

I'm a descendant of Eleanor Hutchinson & William Metcalf of NYC. I've no proof that your Absalom is related, but the circumstantial evidence says that Absalom was Eleanor's brother (court papers naming Absalom as William Jr.'s uncle), and Eleanor's death notice in a NYC paper names Alfred Winans. Other researchers say he married a Mary Ann Hutchinson, so I'm guessing that she's Eleanor's sister.

Are you a member of If so, search on Absalom Hutchinson, b. 22 Jun 1793, Ireland, d. 01 Apr 1879, Pennsylvania (Bradford, McKean Co.).

I have no original research. Mark Darrin Martin (he's actually a 3rd cousin of mine descended from William Metcalf) has posted an 1879 Bradford PA newspaper article transcription, which is the closest I've seen to any history. (

I suggest you look for Absalom's descendants, who may more info that is not posted online.

Surnames: Hutchinson, Thistle, Winans, Mills,Palmer, Ullmann, Lee, Delano, Kendall,
was your Eleanor THISTLE HUTCHINSON a widow of ?

Or was she sister to Absalom?

Absalom seems to be furthest back ancestor of this HUTCHINSON line, whose descendant, Mr. HUTCHINSON seems to be on the Family Finder match list to my MILLS fellow on

my MILLS DNA Kit #33009 as George MILLS D: 1674 Jamaica, LI NY USA formerly Rustdorp.

Have posted to web site,

Do notice that Alfred WINANS seems to be a descendant of Jonathan WINANS and Susannah MILLS.

Susannah was daughter of Samuel MILLS and Susannah PALMER
Samuel was son of George MILLS D: 1674 Jamaica, LI NY USA.
Per book by Helen S ULLMANN she published through NEGHS in 2000-01. for the descendant of Herbert LEE MILLS and Bessie DELANO KENDALL, "A MILLS Related Family".
