Seeking information on the Carmans that settled in the Greenville/Spartanburg area of South Carolina.

John Melton Carman (b. .1815 d. 1884) was born in SC, but his sister was born about 1810 in Tennessee.

Who was John Melton's father? My theory is that his father is the long, lost Joseph Carman originally from Jefferson County, TN.

I have a lot of information on John Melton's descendants if interested.

Where are your Carmans from? Mine lived in Greenville District (now Greenville and Spartanburg Counties) mostly in what is now Greer, SC. I'll be glad to share what I have if you are interested.

I am 99.99% certain that my Carman line are related to the Jefferson County, TN Carmans. The father of John Melton Carman is a Joseph Carman (born in TN). It just so happens that of the Jefferson County Carmans, Joseph is the only son that no one knows what happened to.

If my Carman line is indeed related to the Jefferson County Carmans, this Carman family descended from John Carman (b. 1606 in Bishops Stoke Parish, Hampshire, England). These Carmans founded Hempstead, Long Island, NY.

This is a well documented family. For more information, visit the web site at

Mr. Carman,

You provided me with some very interesting information.

Do you by any chance know who Jefferson Franklin's father is. My 3 great grandfather, John Landrum Carman, was born in 1846. His father was John Melton Carman (b.1815 in TN).

Your's is the first Carman line in the Greenville area that I've come across that isn't a desendant of John Melton. This makes me wonder if Jefferson Franklin's father was a brother to John Melton.

I know that John Melton had, what I believe to be, a spinster sister named Lucinda (b. abt 1809)in TN. She lived in his household on the 1860 or 1870 census.

I believe that John Melton and Lucinda are the children of Joseph Carman from Jefferson County, TN. He is the only child from his family that it is unknown what happened to him. I have found a Joseph Carman of the close age of this Jefferson County Joseph Carman in the Greenville County, SC area and I do know that a Joseph Carman is the father of both John Melton and Lucinda.

Any information you might have on John Franklin's father could fill in the blanks. I do believe that he is at least a nephew of my John Melton.

Jefferson Frank Carman is my gg-grandfather. My g-grandfather is his son, George Walter Carman. The other children of J.F. Carman that I am aware of (from the 1910 census) are:

Taylor, Henry, William H., and Mary Elizabeth.

George Walter Carman's son, Samuel Franklin, is my grandfather.

I don't have much more info - have been digging around for a bit, but hope this helps. Anyone that can give me info on Jefferson Frank Carman's father? I'd appreciate it!

My Carmans are from the Greenville area - Easley and Pickens as well. My grandfather was Samuel Franklin Carman, son of George Walter Carman, grandson of Jefferson Franklin Carman. I'm trying to run down the parents of Jefferson F. Carman - it's like pulling hen's teeth!
