I am trying to establish the parentage (from afar - NZ) of Thomas HEPTON who married Jane WILFORD in Brompton by Northallerton on 11 Sep 1764. He was born c. 1741. and I have found 2 candidates, Michael Hepton of Stokesley or Leonard Hepton/Hebdon/etc. (? from Wakefield) whose son Thomas appears to have been baptised in Northallerton.

Thomas & Jane HEPTON were my great x 5 grandparents.

Can you shed any light on this problem?

Ever hopeful,

Hi Karen,
Thomas bn 1741 was the son of Leonard +1777 who mar Mary Brewster 1734 at Northallerton. She also +1777.
Leonard bap 17aa Bagby (east of Thirsk) son of Timothy, there was another son Thomas bap 1706 bur 1707. A third son Timothy bap Northallerton son of Timothy (Timothy a rare name in Hs).
There is a will of Christopher H of Maltby Stainton (nr Middlesborough) proved 1720 made 1719 which mentions bros Timothy & Johas (sic). Cannot identify this Christopher at present. Many Christophers in Hebden families.
As you go back any Hepton/Hebdon will be from Hebden. Hepton occurs particularly in the E & NE of Yorkshire.
Thomas & Jane moved to Leeds where the family were in the plumbing&c trade but later generations were mantle manufacturers. A marriage to a Lawrence lady resulted in the the name Lawrence being included in the christian names of later family.
Two sons of Thomas & Jane. Thomas & William were clockmakers, William's family continuing with a branch settling in Wellingborough. The clocks command a premium.
Would like to know how you connect, you are welcome to e-mail direct to hebden1name@btopenworld.com . You may like to look at www.angelfire.com/hi5/hebden/ and at http://www.prattens.co.uk/families/hebden/notes.html .
The first was compiled by a daughter of a cousin who died suddenly in 2005; we cannot access it to amend it as no-one knows her password and Lycos have not responded to messages. Narratives of some 25 H families are included.
The second has info in chronological order from way back but we have a much bigger similar file in hand.
