My grandfather was Atty. John Milton Bailey. His father was Andrew J. Bailey, a Confederate in the Civil War, who moved from Lee County, Va. to Harlan Co., Kentucky.
Andrew's brother, Green Bailey, was a wealthy land owner or farmer in Lee County, Va. Does anyone have any information on these men? Thank you, K Brashear.

Christy: Are you by any chance related to the Youngs of Knott County, Kentucky?

As for the Baileys, my great grandfather Andrew J. Bailey b. 1835 m. Nancy Smith b. 1835, both of Harlan County, Kentucky. Their children were as follows: John Milton Bailey b. 1856?, Carr Bailey, Green Bailey, Henry Bailey, James Bailey-is this William James?, Susan Bailey and Jonathan Bailey.

Its my understanding that John M. Bailey, his brothers and sisters, did have Bailey relatives living in Lee County, Va. at the time they were children. In a news article from the 1940s, John M. Bailey mentions the name of an uncle Green Bailey in Lee County, Va. It is also mentioned that he and family came to Kentucky with "Grandfather Bailey" who would be Capt. John Bailey b. 1802-1893.

I have also read or gathered limited info. that states Andrew J. Bailey lived later or died in Texas. I have nothing to substantiate this. And, I have no info. whatsoever on John Milton Bailey's brothers and his sister, Susan.

I am expecting some info. from Kinsale, Va. It was through the Chesapeake Bay area that our family, Baileys, entered into America. They settled in and around Kinsale, Va. The Bailey Greathouse and the family cemetery is there overlooking the bay.

Also, our ancestor "Thumby" John Bailey and wife are buried in Pennington Gap, Va. If you believe this to be same Bailey line as yours, I would be glad to send copies to you of what info. I have.

As for the Young family, my husband's family is from New England, not Kentucky.
As for my Bailey connection, I don't think this is the same Andrew J. Bailey, although I imagine they are connected somehow. Do you have any info on your Andrew's parents?

I suspect that my Andrew's father is also Andrew and his mother is Anna... although this is just a suspicion at this point.

Its my understanding that Stephen Bailey b 1620-30 is the progenitor of the Lee County, Va. Baileys. He and family came to America from England. I would think your line would go back to him somehow. He married Ann Walker.

My Andrew J. Bailey b 1835 m. Nancy Smith-I do not know if he had other marriages. I have not checked with the County Clerk of Harlan Co., Ky. or Lee County, Va.). His parents were Capt. John Bailey b 1802-1893 m. Hannah Smith of Harlan County, Ky; 2-Betty Ledford; 3-Martha (Patsy) Clark.

Capt. John Bailey's parents were John T. (Thumby) Bailey b 1773 and m. Nancy Tunnell, Lee County, Va. John T. Bailey and his wife Nancy are buried at Robbins Chapel, Pennington Gap, Va. Gravesite underneath or by old oak stump.

I think I may have found something: James Bailey, Jr. b. 1843 or 1849 m. Liza? b. 1853. James Jr. is the son of James Bailey b. 1815 m. Elizabeth ?, b. 1818. James Bailey, Jr. is the grandson of John "Thumby" Bailey and Nancy Tunnell Bailey, Lee County, Va.

James Jr.'s children: Elizabeth, Hamilton, Sarah, Hiram, Barbara

Christy: I believe your line does descend from John Thumby Bailey. Go into Google search engine, enter name of John Thumby Bailey and websites will come up. Click into first website or whatever, it will give you info. on John Thumby and family. I then clicked onto his son's name-Capt. John Bailey, got info on his family. I'm not certain he would be correct ancestor for you though, but anyway you can continue to just scan down the page until you find Andrew J. Bailey, Sr. and then of course Andrew J. Bailey, Jr. Their children are listed as you had named them. Hope this is of help to you.

Andrew J. Bailey b. 13 Jun 1834, Harlan, KY, d. 18 Apr 1890, Authon, Parker, TX and Nancy Smith, b. 20 Jul 1835, Harlan, KY, d. 23 Feb 1918, Parker, TX were also my great grandparents. My grandfather was Henry Clay Bailey. He said that Robert Bailey who was Lt. Governor of Arkansas, 1937-1943 was his nephew. Information that I got from the state of Arkansas listed Robert's parents as John Marshall Bailey and Mallie French of Hindman, Knott County, KY and his grandfather as Andrew J. Bailey of Harlan County, KY.

Andrew J. and Nancy Bailey were on the 1860 census in Harlan County, KY with sons John (3) and Jonathan (3/12). They were in Lee County, VA on the 1870 census and until my grandfather, who was born in 1875, was about 3 years old. Then they and a group of people moved back to Harlan County. My grandfather got tired of walking. No one missed him until the group stopped for the night. The next morning, the men went back and found him asleep under a tree.

You have all the children of Andrew and Nancy that I have. Jonathan was not with the family on the 1880 census in Harlan County, so I believe he died young. All the other children went to Texas with Andrew and Nancy, so Nathaniel Green, son of Andrew J. and Nancy, could not have been in Lee County, VA. He was in Texas in 1940.

Back to your query, who was your grandmother, the wife of your John Milton Bailey?

The Baileys of kinsale, descendants of Stephen Bailey, migrated into both Harlan and Mcgoffin county Kentucky. The ones that landed in mcgoffin had a Greene Bailey. My great great grandfather Henry Gardner Bailey had a son named Green who would be my great uncle. Don't know if this is the same Greene Bailey you're talking about, but thought I'd send you this.
