THE FAMILIES OF JOSEPH HEITZ AND GREGOR HEITZ OF BADEN, ROME, NEW YORK, and OSHKOSH, WISCONSIN
Joseph Heitz and Gregor Heitz, about three years apart in age, born in Baden, now a part of Germany, were both bakers and neighbors in Rome, New York, in 1860 and moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, around 1867. By 1892 Gregor was in Klickitat County, Washington, where one of Joseph's daughters was living with her husband and family. Joseph and Gregor may have been brothers, but documentary proof has thus far not come to light.
PART 1 -THE FAMILY OF JOSEPH HEITZ
1. JOSEPH HEITZ was born in March of 1826 in the Grand Duchy of Baden and died 21 Feb 1909 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Records of the Catholic church in Appenweier, a village30 miles southwest of Baden-Baden, show that on 7 Jun 1849 one Joseph Heitz, age 23, a shoemaker, married Euphemia Mueller, age 27, of the village of Ebersweier. Joseph was the son of Andreas Heitz, a farmer of Appenweier, and his wife, Maria Anna Benz or Lenz. Euphemia was the daughter of Joseph Mueller and his wife Marianna Lauer or Bauer. They were both from the village of Steinbrunn.
Joseph came to America in this same year of 1849, according to the 1900 census. He may have come over alone and worked to save money to pay for his wife's passage. In 1850 "Josp. Hyatt", a 25-year-old baker from Germany, was boarding with a family in New York City. He may have moved to Rome, New York, by 1860. That year we find Joseph "Hites", 34, occupation baker, with "Bina", age 27, and children Amelia, Charley, Henrietta and Joseph at Rome. In 1870 their surname is entered as "Haite" and in 1880 "Heitz".
If Euphemia Mueller's age in 1849 was correct at 27, she was born around 1822. If 17 was her correct age, she would have been born around 1832. Bina's year of birth, if her age is correctly listed in 1860, would have been around 1833. On the transcribed death record of Joseph's daughter Amelia (Heitz) Yeackel, her mother's name is entered as Rubena Altsfelt. Amelia's sister Elisabeth's transcribed marriage record shows her mother as Jacobina Miller.
Censuses are notorious for recording surnames and ages incorrectly and for taking down individuals' first names on some censuses and middle names on others. In order to determine who the mothers of Joseph's children were, it needs to be learned whether or not, despite name and seeming age differences, Euphemia Mueller, Rubena Altsfelt, Jacobina Miller and Mrs. Bina Heitz were one person or more than one, and if more than one, when he married them.
Page 21 of "Proceedings of the Board of Supervisors of the County of Oneida, New York", shows that in 1866 Joseph's children at that time - Amelia, Charles, Henrietta, Joseph, Elisabeth and Theresa - were being supported temporarily by the Oneida County Superintendent of the Poor. They were admitted to the Utica Orphan Asylum on 20 Oct 1866 and dismissed on the day before Christmas, 24 Dec 1866.
This suggests Joseph's wife, Bina, had died and that for a short period Joseph was not in a position to give them the care they needed. It is highly likely that 1866 or early 1867 was the time of Joseph's marriage in Rome to Ellen Butler (1838-1910). Later known as Helen, she was reported in her obituary to have been born to John and Margaret (McCune) Butler in County Westmeath, Ireland, on May 25, 1838, to have come to the U.S. as a child and lived at Rome until she married Joseph Heitz. They came to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1867.
At that time Joseph was the father of six children. Ellen would present him with three more: Martha Grace, Balthasar (Robert) and Susan.
Starting out in Oshkosh, Joseph was a baker, as he had been in Rome. By 1880 he had become a butcher, and this led him into cattle dealing, which earned him a good reputation throughout Winnebago County. At his death in 1909 at the age of 83, he was well known as "The Old Cattle Buyer".
He died on Sunday, February 21, 1909, after suffering for five months from gangrene of the foot, the result of a plank falling on it. His funeral took place from St. Mary's Church in Oshkosh and he was buried in Riverside Cemetery there.
He was survived by his wife, Helen, six daughters and three sons, 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
After Joseph died, Helen said that she had had a dream, and in it she had promised him that she would be with him before a year had passed.
In early December, 1909, Helen went to visit her daughter Grace, Mrs. Harry Brenneck, at her home in Waterloo, Iowa. There, on January 13, she suffered a paralytic stroke and died a month later, on Sunday morning, February 13, 1910. Her remains were returned to Oshkosh, where her funeral was held on Tuesday, February 15, in St. Mary's Church. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.
NOTE: In the DESCENDANT NUMBERING SYSTEM used below, the first digit stands for Joseph. The second digit represents one of his children, in order of birth. A third digit indicates a grandchild of Joseph. Number 143 would mean the 3rd child of the 4th child of Joseph, No. 1.

Gregor "Hites" is listed on the same page of the 1860 census as Joseph "Hites" in Rome, Oneida County, New York. Both were bakers there and again around 1867 when they moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Exactly when Gregor took his family from Wisconsin to Washington is not known, but it may have been around 1888. Their last child was born in Wisconsin in December of 1883. The 1892 Washington state census roll lists Gregor and Caroline in Klickitat County immediately following the family of Conrad Yeackel, who married Joseph Heitz' daughter Amelia and came to the county in 1877. Gregor's oldest daughter, Susan Amelia (Heitz) Walther, and her husband came to the Centerville area in 1888, and his son Gregor Joseph Heitz appears there in the state census of 1889. None of the older Gregor's living children remained in Wisconsin.
