I don't know where Arza Searl is buried, but I am descended from his brother, Samuel Searl. I do have 4 children for Arza - Gideon, Stephen, Alonzo and Amy. I got that from the 1850 census.

1850 US - Great Valley, NY #4.
Arza Searl, 47, Farmer, NY.
Ann, 49, NY.
Gideon, 20, NY, school.
Stephen, 17, NY, school.
Alonzo, 15, school.
Amy, 7, school.

Write to me privately, and we can compare and perhaps fill in some other blanks.

Does anyone know where Arza Searl is buried? He was born in 1802 in Whitehall, NY and died in 1884 in Great Valley, NY. Arza was one of the first settlers in Great Valley and lived there nearly 60 years. His wife was Ann Wood. They had 8 children of which I know of 3: Gideon Searl born 1830 married Laura Starr, Alonzo Searl, and Amy Searl who married Henry Blighton.
I've been all over Great Valley looking for his grave with no luck.
Thank you.

Thank you very much! I don't get over to Cattaraugus county very often to do look ups in the census. Stephen must be named for Ann's father, Stephen Wood. Now I just have four more of Arza and Ann's children to find.
Thanks again.

I have that Arza went to Catt. Co. in 1821 with four of his brothers. I know that he is the son of Gideon and Hannah Woodward and that they had 15 children. I have only six of them: Abraham b 1787 d 1846 m Jerusha Wood 1809; Josiah or Jariah bn 1788 d 1863 m Rachel Searle/Sarle; Isaac bn 1789 d 1860 m Martha Hotchkins; Arza bn 1801/1803 d 1884 m Ann Wood 1825; Almon b 1815 m Jane Scott; and now Samuel. Can you help fill in the other children's names and information? In the History of Walworth Co. Wisconsin under Joseph and Isaac Searle, it mentions that their parents went to Ellicottville, NY in ca 1823 and died there, but doesn't give me their names or if Isaac and Joseph are brothers. Isaac was born 1814 at Whitehall, Washington Co. NY and Joseph was born 1812 place unknown. I am really hoping that Joseph's father is a son of Gideon and Hannah and a brother of Arza. Thanks for your time and help. Glenys

Almond D. SEARL is the son of Jeriah and Rachel (SARLES) SEARL. The children I have for Jeriah and Rachel are:

Almond D. SEARL (1815-1882) md. Jane M. SCOTT (children: Dalton, Emily, Covill, Walter, Julia, Electa, Lucy, Frank, Elmer E., Ellen and Agnes).

Caroline C. SEARL (1821-????) md. John W. SILL (children: Lucy O., William B., Fanny M., DeForrest J., Charles, Luna)

Samuel S. SEARL (1824-1891) md. Lucretia ROGERS (children: Cora M., Clifton R., Marshall J., and Arthur J.)

Lucy B. SEARL (b. agt 1826) -- you can help me on this one, because I have no further information on her.)

I have always believed that Gideon and Cynthia (SWEETLAND) SEARL had more children as those I havd are spaced so far apart, so your Joseph SEARL fits right in after Gideon.

Contact me privately by email and lets start spreading out our documentation. Maybe we can get through some brick walls here.

Hello Karen: Wow! Thanks for all the information. I have two things, first who then is Almon Searl bn ca 1815 married Jane Scott, had eleven children, one of whom is Lucy Searl Varnum, she notes she is seventh of 11. I had him as a son of Gideon and Hannah. And secondly, I have a Joseph Searle, son of Gideon and Cynthia, born 1765, VT, died 1 Nov 1860 at Crown Point, Essex Co. NY, mrd Susan/Suzanne Searles who died 29 Jun 1834. Their children include Joseph bn ca 1787; Mahala bn 29 Oct 1792 d 14 Jul 1838 m Eben Drake 1812; Nicholas?; Nathaniel and Ransom m Phebe Stanton. It's possible Joseph b 1787 is the father of Joseph Utter Searle bn 1812, who I cannot find anywhere except Wisconsin. Again, I am very grateful for all of your help. You have really shed light on some dark places. Glenys
