I am not related. Not understanding how the Holly surname fits in.

Fatima Flake was still single in 1860 census living with father. Samuel Z Williams was born 1861 or 1862, Fatima Williams married Levi W Cummings in 1866 b. MS abt 1834.

Fatima's brother, Martin VanBuren Flake, had 2 wives. The 2nd one was Susan E Williams. Perhaps it was Susan's brother, Thomas P Williams, that married Fatima ? I find one person documenting the sister Mary Frances Williams only. nburns32 family tree titled Burns/Littleton

Martin VanBuren Flake and 1st wife Martha Perilia Bruton (1836-1912) divorced.

Unfortunate that neither of Samuel Z Williams parents are named on his death certificate in Nolan Co TX.

Some of your information on Martha Perilla Bruton has been misinterpreted. I am her great-great granddaughter. Martha was never divorced and never married to Martin Van Buren Flake, however, she and her two children lived in his home after the death of her first husband, his older brother, Lafayette Flake. Her second husband was William A. J. Rogers. The information below was provided to me by the Tishomingo County Historical Society in April of 2014. Anything with two ** are my comments.

Martha Perilla Bruton was born about 1837 in Prentiss Co., Miss. She died 18 Jul 1912. Martha married Lafayette Flake in Itawamba Co., Miss., on 24 Dec 1855. Lafayette Flake, a farmer and a preacher, died in Tishomingo Co., in 1860. Martha married William A. J. Rogers, son of John Rogers, on 27 Jun 1865 in Tishomingo Co., Miss. [Note: Records show Alcorn Co., but Alcorn Co. was not formed out of Tishomingo Co. until 1870.]

Censuses in which Martha Perilla Bruton was found:
• 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Carrollville Post Office, Tishomingo County, Mississippi [now widowed, Martha was living with her two children, Thomas (4 yrs.) and Laura (2 yrs.) in the home of her brother-in-law, Martin Van Burren Flake.
• 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Booneville, Prentiss County, Mississippi [Martha Perilla was now married to William A. J. Rogers] **Five months after Martha and WAJ Rogers married, Martin married Susan E. Williams.
• 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Precinct 2, Hood County, Texas
• 1910 U.S. Federal Census, Justice Precinct 1, King County, Tex.

Children of Martha Perilla Bruton and Lafayette Flake:
1. Thomas Jefferson Flake; son; born Nov 1856; married Willie J. Dalton; known children: Jimmie P., Exsa E., Earl, Mineatree, Zelma, and Paul Flake. **Willie Dalton later married Lee Otha Smith, noted below as grandson of Martha Perilla and WAJ Rogers.
2. A. Laura Flake; daughter; born 1859; died 1896; buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery #02, Boyd, Wise Co., Tex.; married 27 Jan 1886 in Parker, Tex., to James Thadys Richardson; known children were: Benjamin, Pearl, and Flake Thadys Richardson (1858-1948).

2. Lowella E. Rogers; daughter; born 1869 in Miss.

Martin Van Buren Flake

Martin Van Buren Flake was born 7 Jan 1839; he died 27 Aug 1916 in Jacksboro, Jack Co., Tex.; burial was in the Oakwood Cemetery. He was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in the 2nd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry.

Anyone interested in the FLAKE family, should buy the book (, FAMILY TREE BOOK: GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL, LISTING THE RELATIVES OF GERERAL WILLIAM SMITH AND OF W. THOMAS SMITH. The Flake family tree is detailed in pages 47-68 with other mentions throughout the book. Regarding Fatima Flake, daughter of Samuel Flake [son of Elijah Flake] the book states, "...D) Fatima Flake, first married Mr. Holly and afterwards married Mr. Williams and went to Buffalo Gap, Taylor County, TX. **Fatima's mother was not named.
