I am a descendant of Rutger Joesten Van Brunt born about 1625 in the Netherlands, married Tryntje Claeson in 1657. They immigrated to New Ultrecht, Kings, N.Y. My family line landed in Omaha, Nebraska. I am seeking the Ancestors for him. If you have any information please email me.

Rutger Joesten VanBrunt married Tryntje Claes in New Netherland , a widow of Stoffelse Harmansen. Tryntje Claes & Stoffelse Harmanszen emigrated in 1651. Stoffelse was killed in Indian raid during the "Peach War", 1655. Tryntje married Rutger VanBrunt ca. 1657.
I am trying to piece together the VanBrunt line because my ancestor Gerrit Stoffelse VanZandt was raised by Tryntje Claes , his stepmother and I'm sure was part of the VanBrunt household. He worked on his stepfather's (Rut VanBrunt)lands.

I live in Omaha Ne. and, from all data received, am also a decendant of Rutger Joesten Van Brunt. I have quite a list dating clear back if that will help.

Whatever you have would be great. My recent relatives are Winslow Mathews Van Brunt who married Irene Winifred Simpson Van Brunt. Both are deceased. Winslow died in 1981 and Irene died in 1995. My mother is Mary Elizabeth Van Brunt-Weigel. She still living and my father is Harry Wallace Weigel. My whole family was born in Omaha. We are currently in the process of being contributors to the Van Brunt Welcome Center at the University of Nebraska in memory of my grandparents, Winslow and Irene Van Brunt who are graduates there. Would love to keep in touch and compare histories.

Here's a little info to get you started:

Rutgert Joesten Van Brunt arrived in New Utrecht (Brooklyn) New Amsterdam in 1653 from Bruntinge, near Drenthe, Holland. Rutgert was the Magistrate of New Utrecht from 1661 to 1685. In 1687 he married Tryntje Claesen, the widow of Stoffel Harmensen. Rutger had had another spouse but my info on her is very sketchy. Rutgert and Tryntje had three sons who seem to be responsible for most American Van Brunts:

1) Cornelis: Born ? in New Utrecht, Died 1748 in New Utrecht. He married on 22 Nov. 1685 in Flatbush, Tyntje Bennet, the daughter of Adriaen, who was born Feb. 1664 in New Utrecht, Died 1738. They had between 7 and 9 children (depending on whose family tree you look at). Their descendants are very well documented on the Family Trees at Rootsweb.

2) Joost: Died 12 Nov. 1746. I have practically no info on him, except that he was the Schoolmaster of Drenthe, a writer of arithmetic books, and had a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosphy.

3) Nicholas I: Born: 1658 New Utrecht, Died: 1684 (at age 26). He married Helen Cortelyou (B: 1663 or 1666 in New Utrecht, Died after 1726). Helen's ancestry is pretty well documented and very interesting. Her father, Jacques II, was the Surveyor of New Amsterdam. Nicholas was one of her three husbands.

As far as I know, Nicholas and Helen had one son (who was born about the time Nicholas I died): Nicholas II (B: Aug. 31, 1684; D: 1714, at age 30); who married Maria (Mayke) Verkerk (D: 1746).

Nicholas II and Maria had two sons: Nicolas IV (D: 1723) and Roeloffe (B: 1714, D: 1768). Roeloffe was the Supervisor of New Utrecht in 1767. On 27 June 1731 he married Elsje Snedeker (daughter of Isaac), with whom he had (at least) 9 children.

Hope that helps. If you can trace your ancestors backwards in time, I can help by tracing these Van Brunt's forward! Good luck.

Please forgive a mistake I made in the previous post: Rutgert Joesten Van Brunt married Tryntje Claesen in 1657, not 1687.

I'm new to this, so bear with me...I don't know much about my current family and nothing about the previous Van Brunt's, since my dad was put into foster care at a young age. He was born in Brooklyn, NY in James Anthony Van Brunt. A sister Carol Van Brunt, brother Robert Van Brunt, sister or stepsister? Geraldine Van Brunt and a younger brother, Michael Van Brunt. James and Robert (my father and uncle) currently live on the East End of Long Island. Any info would be great! Better off emailing me, since I may not get back to this spot. Thanks for the patience! -Jennifer Van Brunt

One of Nicholas's and Mayke's(Maria) children was Roelof b. 1700 d. 1768. He (Roelof) married Elsie Snediker. One of Roelof's children was Jacques b. sept 24, 1746 d. aug 20, 1811.
This is the line that eventually comes down to me. I have sparse info and would like more info on this line if anyone has it.

In Reply to Pete Van Brunt:

Since you have the Van Brunt surname, I looked for descendants who carried on the name.

First, here is starter info on Jaques, the son of Roelof Van Brunt & Elsie Snediker:

Jaques (or Jacques) <Roelof> Van Brunt II (B: 24 Sept 1746; D: 20 Aug 1811) married Maria (or Mary) <William> Johnson in June 1775. She was the daughter of William Johnson and Mary Monfoort of Gravesend. They had 9 daughters and one son.

I found two children of Jaques & Maria Van Brunt who might have descendants alive today with the Van Brunt surname, their son Roelof and their daughter Antje. Here they are:

1. Roelof (or Rulef) <Jaques> Van Brunt, b. Jan 10, 1777, d. Aug. 12, 1833, m. Jan. 8, 1801, Geertie, or Gertrude, dau. of John Covenhoven, of New Utrecht. b. June 1, 1782 and died April 1, 1865. They had a son:

Captain Jaques <Roelof> Van Brunt, b. May 20, 1802 in New Utrecht, d. May 20, 1865, m. Dec 19, 1822 to Ann, daughter of Daniel Barre, of New Utrecht, b. Jan 25, 1802. They had two sons:

(a) Roelof <Jaques> Van Brunt, born 8 Nov. 1823.
(b) Daniel <Jaques> Van Brunt, b. 11 Feb 1826, d. 24 May 1899, mar. 13 Oct. 1847 to Mary <Cornelius> Bergen, B: 31 March 1828.

2. Antje <Jaques> Van Brunt, (4th Child of Jaques & Maria, this is the "daughter" I mentioned above), b. 1 Jan 1781; d. 3 May 1859; mar. 3 Apr. 1800 to Cornelius <Wynant> Bennet (b. 3 Dec 1776; d. 25 Sept. 1852). One of their daughters was:

Jemima <Cornelius> Bennet, b. 5 Dec. 1814. She married George Van Brunt and had the following sons:

(a) George Washington <George> Van Brunt, b. 1842, mar. Louise Souder in 1867.
(b) Winant Edward <George> Van Brunt, b. 1845
(c) William <George> Van Brunt, b. 1851
(d) Albert <George> Van Brunt, b. 1854

I think you are related to one of these 4 sons or the 2 sons listed above.

The Daniel you mentioned(son of Jaques) had a son Rulef b. 6-9-1862. Rulef had 2 sons--Daniel b.8-24-1887 d. Aug of 1963 and I believe a Mervin. Daniel(Rulef) was my grandfather. I have more on that line if you need it. I really need to know anything about Mervin. I have no info on him or his direct decendants. They would be my closest relatives.
