seeking help regarding James Hogan, was a bandmaster in British Army 14th Foot in Quebec 1849, 47th Foot in Lancaster in 1866. Daughter Mary Ann Brighton nee Hogan married John Shaw from Sheffield at Christ Church in Cork on 18 Dec 1869. Newspaper announcement of this marriage states James Hogan Esq so not sure if left army by then or what he was doing. Do not know his place of birth or what happened to him after this date. Any help appreciated. Wendy

James Hogan Esquire. Esquire-did not find any listed in the James Hogan's in Cork. However, if he was high up in the Army which a bandmaster might be, when Officer's left the Army they often acquire land and rented it out for income. Most of the Hogan's in the 1852 Griffith Valuation are the head tenants and have sub-tenants. These men would be called Gentlemen or Esquires as they didn't work for a living. They are not nobility. Its a common English term. Cannot say for sure if these are your James Hogan, keeping in mind you can only live in 1 house at a time, if you didn't live there you rented/leased it out.

Directories of Ireland. Cork
James A. Shaw residing 3 Temple place, Cork

John M.Shaw Ropemaker 196 Blarney Lane has the microfilm for the marriage but the Church isn't listed. Oddly they have two records
1)Mary Ann 2) Mary Agnes with the same microfilm numbers
which match John Shaw 101251/004179384

I imagine you have done the history on the 47th. of Foot formed 1741 in Scotland, name change 1881 to Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
Served in North American, Nova Scotia, Quebec, 7 year war, American War of Independance, Napoleonic & Crimeans Wars.

You can probably get his BA records and retirment through the National Archives in Kew, England. They have contracted out the records to a pay per view website - link is on the NA.

A good website/message for Military Genealogy Ireland is the called MILGENIRE, you can google.

I don't see John Shaw or Mary Anne Shaw in the 1901 Census
there are a couple of John Shaw's born in England but not Sheffield or the right age.

Many thanks for your efforts. With so many James Hogan's around Army circles hard to know which one is he. Am awaiting info from Nat Archives which may help. John Shaw and Mary Ann went back to live in Sheffield and they are there on 1871 census but I do not know what happened to James Hogan's wife Amelia or his other daughter Florence Amelia (born Lancs 1866).
