If you have access to the revolutionary war pension papers you will find an application for Robert Holmes. He was born in Ireland on Jan. 5, 1748 or 1749, arrived in Penn. in 1771. Joined service in Penn. and fought there before coming to Rowan county in 1777, where he also served. He married Margary bell, daughter of Thomas Bell of Rowan (now Iredell) County, in 1783. Thomas Bell moved into the Rowan county area sometime before about 1772. He is my ancestor. I descend from his daughter Nancy. He left Rowan (Iredell) sometime between 1796 and 1800 and moved to Robertson county Tennessee. Nancy married Thomas Bell, probably a cousin, and they raised their family in Iredell county and most of their descendents still live here. Robert and Margary Holmes moved to Sumner county Tenn, which joins Robertson county.

If in your research of the Holmes family you happen to learn anything of Thomas Bell I would certainly appreciate hearing from you.

Robert Holmes was born in Lower Dublin Township of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and died in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. He was on the Committee of Safety of Rowan County, NC. 1-/17/1775; appointed Justice of the Peace of Rowan County in 1776; ranked as Colonel during the Revolutionary War for which service North Carolina granted him 6200 acres of land on the waters of the Forked Deer and Obion Rivers in its Western District, which area is now part of Gibson County, Tennessee. (Robert's son, William Holmes (my ggg grandfather) located on this property and began a settlement very early about 2 miles south of the present day Yorkville. I have been to the graves of William and his wife, Nancy Eaton Holmes in Yorkville, TN)
By 10/4/1798 Robert Holmes had moved to the Big Creek area in the southwestern part of Oglethorpe Couty, Georgia adjoining the Clarke Couty line, where he died. His will was dated 6/21/1810, proved 1/1/1816, and recorded 1/31/1816 in Book A-B, Page 121, Oglethorpe County, Georgia.
