I am relatively new to Ancestry and have just noticed that my great grandfathers line heads off in two directions having two lots of different parents. His picture is used for both lines. Robert Buck born in 1868-1947 born in Norfolk has some people listing his parents as Henry Buck and MaryAnn Atkins whilst the other half has his parents listed as George Buck and Harriet Woor ? I'm now confused and start to doubt my self in which side I should be investigating???? Does this happen often and is this like Wikipedia???

There are 4 Robert Buck born Norfolk between 1845 & 1847 inc.To find the right one you need to have worked back from yourself proving your way with BMD certificates otherwise you can find that you have researched the wrong family.

I think Sandra misread the year of birth. There were actually two Robert BUCKs born 1867 - 1869
Robert BUCK Jun 1868 Depwade
Robert BUCK Sept 1868 Loddon

Both appear on the 1871 census with their respective parents: Henry & Mary Ann give their son's place of birth as Long Stratton (covered by Depwade district), while George & Harriet's son was born at Ellingham (covered by Loddon district).

I checked out the many public family trees you mentioned and not one even mentions Robert BUCK's marriage, although they do show his wife as Florence Jane SANDS.
Robert & Florence were married Jun 1890 Mutford v.4a p.1409

If you order a copy of their marriage certificate it will provide you with the name and occupation of Robert's father and clear up the mystery. It's quicker, and cheaper, to order online direct from the GRO at:

"Does this happen often and is this like Wikipedia?"

If you mean inaccurate information on Ancestry trees, yes! The misinformation is worse than Wikipedia.

Never copy information from other trees; do your own research. Use the trees only as possible leads. As Sandra said, to do otherwise may cause you to find you're following the wrong family.

Have a good read of GENUKI (, the BMD tutorial at, explore The National Archives (start here:, and read a few books from the library about researching family history.

You may find it helpful to join the BUCK surname mailing list ( and the Norfolk mailing list ()

Good luck!

Thanks so much for all the links, I will most certainty have a look at them. I usually check all census records to see who was living where and to correspond dates etc but was just a bit surprised to see my Great Grandfather as having different parents to whom I had, and being 'new' don't understand it all. I think I am on the right track and can see how easy it would be to head up the wrong path.
Everyone has been so helpful....thanks again everyone!
