Orphanage in WA?

I am having such a hard time finding information about my husband's grandfather. His parents died when he was about 5 and 7, and he and his brother were sent to an orphanage, but I have no idea where and have not yet been able to find any information to help.

Information about his family that I know:
Charles Matte may have been born 28 Feb 1878 (where?). He married Anna Vaulpey (or Volpe?), who was born 16 July 1885 (where?). They had at least two children, the first being born about 1920, the second, Robert D (my husband's grandfather), was born about Nov 1925 somewhere in Washington state. Anna died in about 1931 in Seattle, King Co, WA. Charles died in about 1933 in Seattle, King Co, WA. Which is when the two boys were sent to an orphanage.

Your husband's grandfather, Robert D. MATTE, gave his date of birth as Nov. 13, 1925 at the time he applied for his Social Security card. I used the Advanced Search at the online Social Security Death Index :

http://ssdi.rootsweb.com

If I had clicked on "SS-5 Letter" at the right-hand end of Robert's entry, RootsWeb would have generated a form letter for me to print out and mail in (with a $27.00 fee) to the Social Security Administration. After waiting several months, I would have received a copy of his SS-5 containing his birthplace and the names of his parents---which you know already.

There was a state census in Washington State in 1892, but I am not experienced in research for that state, so I don't know if it is accessible or indexed or dusty.

The federal census of 1900 was indexed by the Soundex method. Perhaps they asked each inhabitant where he was born---that's one of the questions you want answered for Charles.

Information about applying for birth, marriage and death records in each state is posted online at :

Good luck from Reg Niles

Thank you for your suggestions.

I have since found death dates for Charles and Anna Vaulpey Matte, but have yet to find where they were buried. I may end up having to pay $17 each for death certificates, but I'm trying to avoid the high costs!

I came across this very old post--in case you are still looking, your Charles and Anna Matte can be found at findagrave.com.
