A. Castleman: This is a total long-shot, but the Cherokee caught my eye. There is a long-standing rumor in the Yocum-Moose- Rouse families of an Indian, first thought to be Cornplanter, now possibly Cherokee. What is the connection of Yocum - Cherokee. Thank you. Sorry, I can't place Nancy Catherine, although those are Yocum names. From Judy.

My g-grandfather Dr. James Lenard Castleman married Nancy Catherine Yocum in 1852 at Tippah,MS she was daughter of John Yocum and Amy Anna Young born GA in 1808. I have considerable info on the Yocum's but cannot find info on Amy Young and family. I believe her father's name was Ezikial but I'm not sure. When dad used to tell me about his Indian grandmother I was pretty young and didn't listen well. I have seen a picture of Nancy in her Sunday go to meeting Indian dress but cannot find out about her mother's family. Feel that they were from the Eastern Cherokee, probably Carolina area. ??? Any help will make me estatic.

The social security death index says Missouri(1956)
She married Lorenzo Dow Mobley.
It says she was born in Ohio but I can't find anything on her hear in Ohio where I live.

Dawn, Although I have four Elizabeth Yocums in my database, none fit the bill. Have you also tried GenForum and the Yoakum home page?
I am sorry I can't help.

I have tried both with no luck.I think she may have been married before. She was 31 years old when she married my grandfather.I just noticed that last night.I always thought that in that age of time they got married at younger ages than what she was at the time of the marriage. It's a possibility. Her mother or gr.mother's name was Ruth Yocum but ever where I have looked no child listed with that name or the wrong dates.Maybe the dates that they have for her birth year is wrong. My gr.father only knew her as Maria Yochum his mother. And he says they spelled her last name wrong also.

I also do not have a Ruth Yocum/Yoakum. Don't dispare, sometimes these things take a while to sort out but some where out there is the key to the puzzle. I am in contact with a couple of others who are researching Yocum (by the way, my grandmother was the only one in her family to spell it that way, all the others used Yoakum, and the original spelling was Jochem), I just yesterday put the Yoakum story on my web page. This particular story was the first I found many years ago and was authored, I think by the Palatines to America Assn, even though Jochem was not a technically a Palatine. That phrase is usually reserved for the 1709ers and the Yoakums came here earlier than that.
If you are interested you can go there and see what my line consists of. I have a lot more yoakums since then but haven't organized it for a page as yet.

she married Lorenzo Dow Mobley in 1923 Moundsville,Marshall Co. WV

Nope, nothing close date wise and I do not have even one Mobley, nor do I have any with the Yochum spelling. Need to find out were they broke away from the main tree, way back probably. The Jochem, Yoakum Yocum Yochum family had several immigrations starting in the 1600s so it's gonig to take time. Are you on the Yoakum/ Yocum mailing list??? A
