I used to know some really crazy Rocca's out in Queens, but they are all married now except for the nutty brother who I think moved out to the island. The mother used to bang pots together on her stoop at midnight on New Year's Eve. This made her really popular in the neighborhood as I'm sure you can imagine! Wish I could be of more help. I don't know where they went, there were a whole bunch of them though.

My grandfather, Domenick Rocco lived in Philadelphia, had 2 brothers in New York (Russell & Louis Rocca) and a sister named Rachael who may have remained in Italy. He was married to Maria Ierardi (ph). My grandfather died in 1961. Any chance your grandfather and my grandfather were brothers?

Hi Annette,
My grandfather Antonio Rocca, born around 1908, from Sambiase, Catanzaro, Calabria, He emigrated to Australia, via Melbourne to North Queensland on the SS Surriento in 1949, his wife Filomena Rocca born 1910, (I am unsure of her maiden name, I will find out from my Uncle's) they had four sons Vincenzo born 1937, Fillipo born 1940, Bernardo born 1944 and my father Aurillo born 1950. He secured their passage to Australia in 1955 on the SS Suriento to Brisbane.
I can remember them talking about an Uncle Tony still in Italy, other relatives went to Canada, they had land in the hills above Sambiase, growing olives, my grandfather was involved in a lime mine in the area as well. I am unsure if there is any connection but info is difficult to find, my Aunty has further info that I will get shortly.

I will try to find out more from my dad to see if we may be connected. About 20 years ago he had some cousins from Austrailia come to visit us in Canada, but I can't remeber thier names or if they were on the Rocca or Leo side of the family.

your great grandfathers name may have been spelled incorrectly as there is no "j" in the Itlaian alphabet, it should be spelled Giacomo. That might help in finding records.
